At Derby College we recognise that every student has different needs. Our Specialist Pathways ensure that people with learning difficulties and disabilities are well prepared for life and work.

An exciting new start

Our Pathways are designed to help you build a more independent lifestyle and develop skills for life and work. It’s all about building your confidence and preparing you for adulthood. You will find your time studying with Derby College’s Specialist Pathways enables you to make more informed choices, speak up for yourself and discover a new sense of control over your life.

mind and i hope the speed is one that

you can enjoy

transitioning from school to college is

an exciting time but also very

nerve-wracking

but not just for you it is also for your

parents carers and your circle of

support whichever campus you are on we

want you to feel supported and make your

move to derby college as smooth as

possible

we do transition so you feel confident

prepared and ready

for the next stage of your education

we want you to settle in and this means

supporting you

to be confident prepared and ready

and what that means to you

transition could be about visiting the

campus that you wish to study on

or seeing your new classroom

transition could be also about taking

part in a taster

session during your taster sessions you

will have a chance to get to know some

of the staff that you’ll be working with

your personal tutor and your support

staff

there may be students that you know on

your pathway but don’t worry if you

don’t there are lots of students here at

derby college that would be familiar

with the site that you’ll be on and

they’ll become your buddy and help you

here at college

we will work with you to plan your

support

i am sure you will have many questions

Skills for work and life

As well as improving your abilities in areas such as English and maths, you will develop your personal and social skills. Pathway to Independence will support you to develop skills and confidence for living independently through a personalised programme. This includes learning experiences which will serve you well in the future, such as going shopping for food, using public transport and managing money. Pathway to Working Life will support you to develop skills and confidence for employment. You might take part in work placements, voluntary work in the community or enterprise activities to develop your communication and team skills.

hi I’m Benny and I manage pathway to

independence at Darby College the

pathway to independence program is based

at the Brimfield campus and would be for

you if you want to work towards living

as independently as possible as an adult

so that might be things like working on

improving your social skills building

your confidence getting out and about

traveling safely being able to shop and

use money as independently as possible

and then being able to plan and cook a

meal for yourself being able to look

after your own home and keep yourself

healthy and safe as well our learning

takes place through lots of practical

activities our students get involved in

things like gardening projects

enterprise projects to raise funds for

charities that they want to support our

students run our in tuckshop they were

in a lunch Club and a cafe to prepare

food for the people lots of

opportunities to build your skills for

independence and skills ready for the

workplace as well so if this sounds like

something that you might be interested

in and you want to know more you’ve got

some questions then please come and join

meeting you pathway to independence is a

personalized program so that means we

will work with you to work out what you

already know and can do and what you

think you need to focus on and learn

next so we’ll think about your long term

goals and aspirations for things that

you want to do after you leave college

and we’ll work with you to plan the

steps along the way to get you there so

we’ll build your program with you and

we’ll also talk to you about what

support you’ll need and how you learn

best in order to help you meet those

pathways to work in life for Darby

College I have a group at Ilkeston a

small animal care group at Brimfield but

my main provision is at the Roundhouse

I’m hoping to sing many of you very soon

take care and I hope you enjoy the

in life is a specialist pathway here at

Darby College and it enables young

people to develop skills and confidence

for employment

centered around preparation for

adulthood and is unique for each

individual it could be a bridge from

school to a vocational area of your

choice where you can develop your math
