Smart and Inclusive Leadership (SAIL) and Branch out in STEM

The STEM and SAIL projects are part funded by the European Social Fund
Derby College Group (DCG) and partners across the region have been awarded funding from the European Social Fund across two projects to benefit employees of local small and medium sized businesses within the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire (D2N2) area.
The project is delivered by a consortium of higher education, further education and third sector organisations. Led by Nottingham Trent University (NTU), the consortium also includes Derby College Group, University of Derby, Nottingham College, East Midlands Chamber of Commerce, Inspire Culture and Learning, and the Workers’ Educational Association.
The programme involves two complementary projects that focus on the development of skills within leadership and management and STEM:

Smart and Inclusive Leadership (SAIL)
The Smart and Inclusive Leadership (SAIL) project aims to provide employees of local SME’s the opportunities for training to develop into future leaders, boosting the development of their growth, productivity, and competitiveness.
Branch out in STEM
The Branch out in STEM (STEM) project aims to provide employees of local SME’s the opportunities for training to develop into future leaders, boosting the development of their growth, productivity, and competitiveness.
Courses available:
Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading Principles
The objective of this qualification is to support learners in a team leading role in the workplace. It is aimed at learners who are new to team leading or looking to progress into this type of job role. The qualification will allow learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of a team leading role, resulting in the achievement of a nationally recognised qualification. This qualification can be applied to a range of occupational sectors.
Throughout the course, delegates will learn:
- The principles of team leading
- Team leading responsibilities
- How to manage oneself and provide direction to a team
- Dealing with conflict
- Communicate information and knowledge work related information effectively
- Understanding how to develop working relationships with colleagues
- Understanding personal development
The course will be delivered through distance learning and can be started at any time. Learners will be allocated a tutor to be on hand throughout their time learning with this qualification.

ILM Level 2 Awarding Leadership and Team Skills
Our nationally recognised ILM Level 2 Award in Leadership and Team Skills units are designed to help team leaders, supervisors and managers who have not had any formal training or qualifications to successfully lead their teams to boost the organisation.
Throughout the course, delegates can complete 1 of these units or both to gain the full qualification:
- Developing yourself as a Team Leader – Helping you to understand the role and responsibilities of a team leader and to improve personal performance
- Understanding Change in the Workplace – Improving your capacity to deal effectively with change as required by a practising or potential team or cell leader
The course will be delivered through a mix of different elements such as online virtual sessions with our dedicated leadership and management tutors and coaches,workshops, and group work or as one-to-ones.

Level 3 Award in Food Allergen Management in Catering
Delegates completing this course will gain a better understanding of requirements to manage the risk of allergenic contamination in a catering environment. Validated by Highfield Qualifications, the programme is particularly suitable for restaurant managers, head chefs, sous chefs, catering managers and owners of takeaways, cafés and sandwich shops.
The qualification is supported by Allergy UK, who regard it as suitable staff training for catering outlets that wish to apply for their Allergy Aware Scheme.

Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety in Catering
Validated by Highfield Qualifications, this course will raise delegates’ awareness of their role in the implementation of food safety procedures at all stages of food preparation and service. It also highlights the importance of their role in the supervision of food handlers in food safety matters.
Delegates should ideally be working in a food business at supervisory or team leading level and hold the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering or an equivalent qualification. Assessment is a 90-minute externally marked multiple-choice exam paper. A minimum of 30 out of 45 correct answers is required for a pass mark.

IOSH Managing Safely
Validated by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), this course brings managers and supervisors up to speed on the practical actions they need to take to handle health and safety in their teams. It gives them insights into best practice, enables them to investigate accidents with greater confidence and provides them with the knowledge and tools to tackle health and safety issues for which they themselves are responsible.
The aim is to ensure that fewer hours are lost to sickness and accidents, with greater staff awareness of safety measures across the workforce and active staff involvement to improve the workplace. Recognised certification for managers and supervisors.
There are no special entry requirements and assessment is via an externally marked multiple-choice exam paper and risk assessment-based project.

Who is eligible?
Any individual that is employed by a small or medium organisation in Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire is eligible for support. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are defined as:
- Less than 250 employees
- Annual turnover under EUR 50 million or; Annual balance sheet less than EUR 43 million
- Not more than 25% of the organisation is owned by an enterprise that is not an SME.
- Companies must be based in the D2N2 area to qualify for support. D2N2 is the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) for Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace
Validated by Highfield Qualifications, this course is designed to give you an overview of the basic principles of good health and safety practice. There are no specific entry requirements and assessment is via an externally marked multiple-choice exam paper.
