Choose from a vast and dynamic range of construction courses at Derby College.

Whatever level you start at, there is plenty of scope to move up the career ladder in a multi-billion pound industry that spans the world.

Construction industry

Construction is one of the biggest sectors in the UK, employing around two million people.

In Derbyshire alone, around five per cent of all employed people work in building and construction.

From bricklayers to plumbers, decorators to electricians, joiners to plasterers, highly-skilled and reliable tradespeople will always be in demand to repair and improve our homes and businesses.

Meanwhile, large-scale building projects - bridges, motorways, hospitals and football stadiums, the list is endless - harness the expertise of professionals such as civil engineers and surveyors whose work can often take them around the world.

If you've always wanted to be your own boss, it's a sector where hard work and ambition can really pay off. More than a third of people in the construction industry are self-employed or run their own company.

Construction is not just a job for the boys either - almost 200,000 women work in construction.

Jack Wood, professional construction student, outside The RoundhouseI am really pleased that the opportunities given to me through the Career Academy has led to getting a job with G F Tomlinson. This is the best of both worlds for me – working and then continuing my qualifications at College and I want to go right through to degree level which I can do here in Derby and then do my final two years at Nottingham Trent University."
