Need a little help and advice on College life and planning your next steps? Then look no further than our expert Student Services team.

The course you take at College depends on what you want to achieve and your previous education so - if you're unsure of the right course or level for you - visit Student Services for a chat. We can give you all the guidance and information you need to plan your future, whether you want to go on to university or enter the world of work.

The team can also provide information on grants, sources of finance and how to apply to the College for financial support. In addition, they can offer support regarding personal matters and refer you to other forms of help where appropriate.

To ensure you have an enjoyable and rewarding experience during your time with us, the College has a number of policies and procedures in place - covering issues such as Child Protection, Student Conduct and Discipline, and Bullying and Harassment. Copies of these policies and procedures are available on request from Student Services.

Careers guidance

Our experienced careers support team will help you make the most of yourself, your learning and your opportunities as you strive to achieve your ambitions. We will provide impartial advice and guidance throughout your time at College, ensuring you can make realistic and informed decisions about your future career.

No matter what stage of the learning process you are at, our dedicated team is there to help. If you need assistance choosing the right College course, we can arrange a pre-course guidance appointment where you can assess what study options most suit your career plans.

Once you've started your studies, careers advisers will be available throughout your time at College to help you decide on your next steps. They offer one-to-one interviews, a drop-in service and group work sessions.

If you're planning to move on to higher education, the team can provide guidance on UCAS applications and can point you in the right direction for taster days and workshops held at the College's partner universities. Each year a Higher Education Guide is available to help you select the right course and institution and to steer you through the application process.

You can access careers information via Derby College Career Coach, at the College libraries or by accessing the Career Planning site in Moodle.

A range of information, advice and support is on offer from the Student Services team at Derby College.

Derby College aims to raise the aspirations and achievement of young people aged 13 to 19 as well as people aged up to 25 who have learning difficulties or disabilities. The service helps young people to stay in learning and tackle any barriers that might prevent them from achieving their full potential.

We can give you important information and advice on career planning and decision-making, employment, training and education options, volunteering, and job vacancies both local and national.

They will also provide support on topics like housing and financial benefits as well as help in dealing with problems such as drugs, bullying and sexual health.

Appointments are available on a regular basis during term time in College. If you wish to make an appointment, you can do so through your tutor or through Student Services.

Care and Care Leavers

If you are a care leaver or living in care, Derby College has lots of support to help you complete your studies. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you are looking to start a new course, and we’re here to support you to make the right decision.

We are happy to meet with you prior to the start of your course to discuss what types of support are available. You are welcome to bring your Key Worker or foster parent.

Learner Voice Champion

Your views are important to us, and Derby College have a range of student forums where you can let us know how we are doing, what's good and what you would like us to improve. We have a dedicated member of staff to ensure your views are listened to and acted upon.

You will be assigned a Personal Coach who will guide you through your studies. You will be offered regular tutorial slots to support you through your course and help you keep on track.

Intervention Support Team

The Intervention Support team are on had to help you overcome any problems you might experience while you are at Derby College. The team can give you specialist support on a range of personal, academic and mental health issues. Our Privacy Notice describes what Derby College Group does with the personal information it is provided with. You may be asked to give the College personal information to become a student, client or to use college systems and services.

Health Advice Service

If you would like free, confidential advice on any health-related matter, contact the College NHS Nurse. Our Health Advice Service provides one-to-one support as well as general guidance. You'll find advice on subjects such as:

  • Eating 4 Health - including weight management and your BMI
  • Quitting smoking - including vouchers for free nicotine replacement patches or gum
  • Sexual health advice - including free condoms, pregnancy testing, contraceptive advice and Chlamydia testing
  • Alcohol use advice - including how to calculate alcohol units
  • Relationships - including how to deal with problems with your friends, family or partner.

Students Contract

When you start your course at Derby College, you will receive a student handbook, which states what we expect of you. In return you can expect:

  • An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set targets and goals for your studies
  • Regular reviews to ensure you meet your targets
  • Support from experienced and qualified Derby College tutors and Connexions Advisers

Student Advice Centre

Derby College Students' Union provides a range of support via its own Student Advice Centre, offering confidential, impartial guidance. They offer support with many issues from sexual health, housing, college procedures, personal issues and any other concerns you may face during your time at Derby College.

The Welfare team's door is always open and there are regular awareness campaigns on key concerns affecting students.
