Taking a T Level in Science at Derby College Group set Allyssa Reyes on a direct route into the healthcare sector. Now aged 20, she is studying for a BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography degree at Sheffield Hallam University and completing a radiography placement in Lincoln hospitals.
Discovering the right learning style
With many family members working in healthcare, Allyssa always imagined following a similar path. She studied healthcare at GCSE and initially planned to take A-levels before progressing to university. However, the A‑level route didn’t suit her practical learning style.
“I did a year of A-levels in biology, psychology and business at Derby College’s Joseph Wright Centre, but the all‑theory style of learning didn’t suit me. I’m more of a hands‑on, practical learner.”
A conversation with the Head of Science helped her explore alternative options — and switching to the T Level transformed her experience.
Gaining real STEM industry experience
Allyssa secured a rewarding placement at Derby Royal Hospital, working within the X‑ray department.
“There was a good mix of work, everything from emergency admissions to people coming in for treatment.”
After completing her T Level with a merit, she returned to the X‑ray unit as a paid assistant radiographer, gaining even more valuable real‑world experience before starting university.
Building confidence through practical STEM learning
Now thriving on her radiography degree, Allyssa is already seeing the long‑term benefits of her T Level.
“My previous work experience for my T Level provided such a strong foundation for my university placement. The experience I gained was so relevant to my degree.”
She also credits the course with boosting her communication and confidence:
“Working hands-on in healthcare and completing projects like attending conferences in London did so much for my confidence. I’m more comfortable talking in professional settings now.”
