JWC Celebrates Achievements

JWC Awards 0902

The achievements of students who recently graduated from the Joseph Wright Centre at Derby College have been officially recognised with a celebration evening attended by more than 150 people.

Among the prize winners were A level students Kar-Man Chu (21) from Derby and Nick Jones (18) from West Hallam who shared the outstanding contribution award.

Kar-Man came to Derby College in 2006 having moved to the UK from Hong Kong to complete a GCSE programme and then progressed onto A levels.  She is now studying Psychology at Birmingham University. Nick  combined his A level studies with part time work and volunteer work and is due to start at Manchester University in 2010 to study medicine.

The outstanding academic achievement awards went to Anna Sharp (18) from Littleover who gained four straight A grades and is now studying Law at Manchester University; Victoria Bradshaw (18) from Shelton Lock who is studying law at Durham University having clinched five grade As and Daniel Hall (21) from Smalley who is now at Peninsular Medical School in Plymouth having achieved a BTEC National Diploma in Music and then three grade As at A level.

Jay Trivedy, Derby College Vice Principal and Head of the Joseph Wright Centre, told the audience of students, staff and families: “This has been another exceptional year for students at the Joseph Wright Centre with an amazing 99% pass rate, a further increase in our average UCAS points score per candidate and more than 40 students achieving triple distinctions in BTEC National vocational courses.

“This is therefore a fitting celebration of the hard work and achievements of our students and the dedication shown by our staff.”

The awards were presented by former JWC lecturer Graham Coope.
