Rachel Huskisson, who leads Library Services at Derby College Group (DCG), graduated in January after completing a part-time, distance-learning Master’s in Library and Information Services Management at the University of Sheffield.
She was also awarded the prize for Best Dissertation in Academic Librarianship.
Rachel began the course in September 2023 while working in school libraries, to broaden her career opportunities and deepen her understanding of information service management across sectors, including education, health and workplaces.
Halfway through the two-year programme, Rachel secured the role of Library Manager at DCG, stepping into senior leadership while continuing her studies.
“Balancing full-time work with a master’s degree was challenging, but incredibly rewarding,” said Rachel.
“The timing meant I could apply what I was learning immediately. Modules on leadership, strategy and change have directly shaped how I approach developing the library service at Derby College Group.”
Her award-winning dissertation explored the role of further education libraries in supporting student wellbeing, research that is now informing DCG’s library strategy.
“My research reinforced how vital libraries are as safe, inclusive spaces,” Rachel added.
“It’s helped me shape a service that places students at the centre of everything we do, removes barriers to access, and supports wellbeing alongside learning.”
Rachel’s line manager, Melanie Lanser, praised her achievement and impact:
“Rachel has taken the Library for Learning Services to the next level and firmly placed libraries at the heart of the student experience.”
“Achieving a master’s with distinction, and winning a national prize, is well-deserved recognition of her leadership, dedication and the positive difference she makes for our students and staff.”
Rachel said she is looking forward to continuing to develop both her professional practice and the college’s library services.
“I want the library to be a place of welcome and belonging for every student,” she said.
“Supporting learners throughout their time at college is at the heart of everything we’re building.”
