Library and Information Services

Libraries for Learning supports your studies at Derby College Group (DCG) by providing access to a wide range of academic resources, study spaces, and expert support.

Derby College Group (DCG) has four site libraries located at:

  • Broomfield Hall
  • Ilkeston Campus
  • The Joseph Wright Centre
  • The Roundhouse

Each library offers facilities to support both independent and collaborative study. These include quiet and group study areas, desktop computers and/or laptops, and printing and scanning facilities.

Library Services

The Library Team is here to support you throughout your time at Derby College and help you make the most of library services and resources.

You will be supported by friendly and knowledgeable staff who can help you access and use library resources effectively, including borrowing materials, reserving items, and making use of electronic resources.

We offer support with:

  • Finding and accessing resources to support your learning.
  • Answering basic IT queries.
  • Using printing, copying, and scanning facilities.

We also support you in developing the skills needed for independent learning, including using library systems and accessing the right information for your course.

Library Resources

Derby College Libraries provide access to a wide range of resources to support your learning, and we welcome student requests to help us enhance and develop our collections.

Physical Resources

Our libraries offer a varied collection of printed materials to support both your course and wider reading.

These include:

  • Academic texts and key reading relevant to your course.
  • Books to support wider reading and independent study.
  • Fiction and reading for leisure, including graphic novels, Quick Reads, and our Read Well collection.
  • Levelled reading materials and resources to support developing reading skills.
  • Accessible resources, including dyslexia‑friendly formats and large print books.

Once you start your course, you will be able to borrow physical items using your student ID card. Items can be borrowed, returned, and renewed either via the self‑service kiosks or at the library counters. You will be shown how this works as part of your induction, with full details provided when you begin your course.

Electronic Resources

Derby College Libraries also provide access to a wide range of digital resources, allowing you the flexibility to study both on campus and remotely.

These include:

  • eBooks, providing online access to key texts and further reading.
  • eJournals, offering up-to-date research and academic articles.
  • Academic databases and subject-specific online resources.

Once you start your course, you will be shown how to access and use these resources, including through the library’s online platforms.

Derby College Libraries provide a range of online tools to help you find and use resources easily, whether you are studying on campus or remotely.

Library Catalogue

The library catalogue allows you to search for both physical and electronic resources, including books and eBooks. You can check availability, explore materials relevant to your course, and manage your borrowing in one place. Additionally, our one search feature connects you to external resources like BBC, TED Talks and Google Scholar, taking you straight to relevant results in one place.

The Roundhouse

The Roundhouse library is centrally located within proximity to most of the teaching spaces. It is on the ground floor with easy access to all on site. Specialised collections for the vocational and technical fields are housed on site. The large, flexible space allows for collaborative and individual study.

Joseph Wright Centre

The library at the Joseph Wright Centre is on the ground floor, close to all amenities, offering easy access for all college staff and students. It offers a much-valued quiet study space with a suite of PC’s available for continued study. This site holds collections that support our A-level students and some of our vocational courses. There is also a wide selection of leisure reads available.

Broomfield Hall

The library at Broomfield Hall is on the first floor above the main reception and cafe. The are lift facilities enabling access for all. We have 6 PC’s and a large laptop bank available to use within the library space. The collections reflect our land based and animal studies as well as much of our higher education resources.

Ilkeston

The open plan library space at Ilkeston offers a warm welcome to all site users at Ilkeston. Situated on the ground floor adjacent to the cafe area. Our students can use the area for group work and individual study. A large bank of laptops are available to use within the library. We house our adult student course content along with our creative and leisure reads.

The Roundhouse library:
