Storm shows that the road to a fulfilling career isn’t always straight
Storm, from Mackworth in Derby, began her training at Broomfield College studying horse care. But when the Covid lockdown hit in 2020, the sudden move to online learning left her feeling disconnected from her subject.
She knew she needed a fresh start, but she also wanted her next step to mean something personal.
That meaning came from her late father, Simon, who had spent hours teaching her about engines when she was younger, often tinkering with his Renault 5 Turbo on the driveway.
After his passing in 2022, Storm decided she wanted to follow in his footsteps, honouring his influence while building a future she could be proud of.
Before retraining, she had worked on the Toyota production line in South Derbyshire, gaining confidence in hands-on engineering. It convinced her she could handle the technical side of vehicle maintenance – she just needed the qualifications.
Enrolling at Derby College, Storm completed her Level 2 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course, progressing through the training and impressing tutors with her commitment.
Lecturer Paul Eatherington, a former mechanic himself, praised her courage in changing direction: “It’s always a big step to make a career change… but if you change careers for something you enjoy, you won’t look back.”
Her skills quickly turned into real-world problem-solving. When her uncle suffered a puncture on the A38, she was able to head out and get him back on the road – a small but satisfying moment that showed just how far she’d come.
Now, Storm runs her own business, Platinum Garage, offering servicing and repairs from her home.
She admits she never imagined herself working in a traditionally male-dominated industry, but says the sense of independence and achievement is worth every challenge.
“When an engine light comes up on my car, I now know what I’m doing – compared to five years ago when I knew nothing,” she says. “I think my dad would be more than proud.”
Storm’s journey shows that change can be daunting, but with passion, training and determination, it can lead to something even better than you first imagined.
For anyone questioning their career path, her story is proof that it’s never too late to find a new gear.
I think my dad would be more than proud.
