Former carer Steph passes five courses to target teaching career

A long-time carer with elderly people has forged a new career in the classroom with deaf youngsters after passing five separate courses at Derby College.

Dedicated Stephanie Davis, 47, switched direction after 20 years and joined Derby’s Royal School for the Deaf as a residential worker in 2008.

Now she has gained a string of qualifications, passing Functional Maths at Level 1 and 2 and Functional English at Level 1, as well gaining NVQs in working with children in a residential setting and as a teaching assistant.

Now Stephanie, from Mackworth, is studying for Functional English Level 2 and aiming to go on to study for a High Level Teaching Assistant qualification at Level 4.

Promoted to Senior Teaching Assistant (Teaching Support), Stephanie says that could be a stepping stone towards her dream job as a teacher at the school.

Previously she gained qualifications with Derby College, in Community Care and Caring for the Elderly.

Every step of the way I've been supported by the college. I'm not a natural at English but the college has given been brilliant and helped my confidence no end.
