Business is blooming for Sarah-May

Sarah-May Anderson’s Saturday job in a fruit and veg shop sowed the seeds of an idea which led to her own floristry shop.

And while the bunches on sale at her part-time work first fired her imagination, it was the broad spectrum of Derby College’s full time Level 3 Floristry course which inspired her to enrol.

Sarah-May, now 28, completed the two year course at Broomfield College after leaving school.

She took time out from floristry and admin jobs to start a family – she has a little boy, Hunter, who is now three-and-a-half.

Last year Sarah-May followed her dream using the enterprise skills she gained at Broomfield and launching her business Stems From The Heart in Long Eaton

The course appealed to me in the first place because it gave a lot more than just floristry – it was quite detailed. It went into business planning, admin, spreadsheets, legislation relating to the workplace and insurance. I learned about design and interior design and costings. On the floristry side, I didn't know much about flowers, or even most of their names when I started. I was at college fulltime for two years and leaned all I needed to know to start off. Put it like this - I don't think I'd be standing here without it.
