DCG academy basketballer Rohan considers taking a sports degree.
Basketball player Rohan Hobday is considering applying to study a sports degree after gaining A grades in his A-levels and a Distinction* in Sport and Exercise Science at Derby College Group.
Rohan, who is 18 and from Belper, is a forward with the Alvaston-based Derby Trailblazers Basketball Club.
He chose to study with Derby College because of his club’s academy programme, which is delivered by DCG at Broomfield Hall.
This initiative gives aspiring young basketballers like Rohan the opportunity to develop their basketball skills while gaining academic qualifications to further their career prospects.
Rohan also studied for A-levels in Business and Psychology at the Joseph Wright Centre alongside his sports course at Broomfield.
On achieving high A-level grades, he said: “I plan to continue playing with the academy, but might apply to university at some point — most probably Loughborough because of its great reputation for sports.
“If I don’t go to uni, I’d like to go and play basketball in the USA.”
Rohan found his time at JWC and Broomfield to be good intermediate steps towards the next stage of his career in sport.
He said: “I had a good time at college. At JWC, I loved the freedom of being able to come and go at lunchtime.
“As a basketball player, I have a packed schedule — eight training sessions and three games a week — but the teaching staff were understanding and allowed me some extra time to catch up on my studies.
“Although I came to college primarily for the academy, I really enjoy the Psychology A-level.”
Students on the Derby Trailblazers Basketball Academy programme benefit from a dedicated training calendar, the chance to progress to elite-level pathways, and access to AoC Sport (Association of Colleges) regional and national trials, as well as basketball competitions.
They also receive technical and tactical coaching; support with psychological, physiological, and lifestyle management; strength and conditioning support; and a dedicated elite-athlete academic study programme.
