DCG placement leads to nursery school apprenticeship for Kiya.

As an older sister to ‘loads of siblings’ Derby College Group former childcare student Kiya Adams has always looked after young children.

And all that practical experience at home is now being put to effective use at Tiny Toez, the Staffordshire nursery where Kiya will soon begin her childcare apprenticeship.

She said: “I’ve done a lot of babysitting and enjoyed it. I’m good at it and right from an early age, everyone told me that I should work with children.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do so straight after school I enrolled on the DCG Certificate in Caring for Children – Level 1 at the Roundhouse the moved on to the level 2 diploma course for early years practitioners.

“I enjoyed college. I liked both courses and how well everything was explained to us by our lecturers.”

During her Level 2 Kiya did a placement. with Tiny Toez, which led to her being taken on as a Level 3 apprentice.

She’s been working at the nursery over the summer while waiting to start her apprenticeship in September.

As an apprentice Kiya will attend Derby College on day release as well as being observed in her role working with three to five year-olds.

She said: “I love being with the children and helping them grow and develop. It’s great. I enjoy all the activities we do with them at nursery school.

“I’d like to work with special needs children one day then go on to train as a social worker working with children.

Another plan is to become a registered childminder and have my own nursery in my home.”
