  • Contacts are no longer required to self-isolate, or advised to take daily tests, and contact tracing has ended.
  • There is no longer a legal requirement for people with coronavirus (COVID-19) infection to self-isolate, however if you have any of the main symptoms of COVID-19 or a positive test result, the public health advice is to stay at home and avoid contact with other people.

COVID-19 continues to be a virus that we learn to live with, and our priority is to support face-to-face deliver of high-quality education to all students in line with government guidance.

Talking futures

When it comes to education and careers, parents, carers and guardians are the biggest Influence in young people’s lives. Talking Futures is a resource designed and created to help you have informed and constructive conversations with your child about training and education pathways available.

The first step in helping your child decide on their future career is preparing them to understand their values, interests and what’s important to them.

That’s exactly what their ‘Pathway Planner’ is for, which you can download for free at

Work through it together and help your child think about where to go for more information and support to help them with their decision making.

Next Steps

The Next Steps process, for all full-time students, has begun and over the next few weeks your child will talk to their personal tutor about plans for their next step.

The Careers team are on hand to support this process and to help students to explore options and make next step decisions.

As part of this, the Careers team have organised a – Virtual Progression Fair to be attended by all Level 3, year 1 students, on Wednesday 23rd March- 9.00am-1.00pm. Students have already received a tutorial session giving them an overview of the event and they will receive further details from their tutor soon. We think you will agree that will be an event packed full of expertise – with all contributors wanting to speak to our students! Please ensure your child is aware and ready to participate. Students have permission to access the event from home, attendance will be monitored.

The Fair is a great chance for your child to choose from over 60, varied, sessions which will be delivered by representatives from over 40 organisations!

Participating organisations include: a range of Russell Group institutions: the University of Liverpool, the University of Nottingham, the University of Southampton and the University of Birmingham.

Providers of specialist courses, including Falmouth, Bangor, Teesside, BIMM and the University of Law and those institutions popular with our students such as the University of Leicester, De Montfort University, Sheffield Hallam University, Nottingham Trent University and, of course, the University of Derby. Industry is represented with employers from the construction, early childhood, digital and creative sectors sector, plus big local employers including the NHS, Derby City Council and Rolls Royce.

Sessions focus on the different routes and pathways available, exploration of subjects and sectors- helping students to understand where options lead; plus, providers will be sharing insider tips to help our students be successful.

Two similar events to our Progression Fair are also taking place in March. Both events are free and will give students/parents/carers the chance to discover a wide range of post-18 progression options, from Higher Education to apprenticeships and employment.
