The holiday season is upon us and your child will have a break from College. The College is closed to students from the 23rd December and re-opens on the 10th January 2023.

PARENTS CONSULTATION EVENINGS

Parents Consultation Evenings are an opportunity for you to meet with your child’s subject teacher to discuss their progress on their course.

Our online booking system is now live for the Year 2, November events. Click on the event you want to attend below to find out more and book your slot. Online booking for the other events listed will be available soon, we will contact you again when the system is live.

Parent and Carer Support

Join the DCG Parent and Carer Support Group…
We have created a Parent and Carer Support Group on Facebook, as a place for you to:

  • Access resources and content related to well-being, careers, study skills
  • Ask questions and offer suggestions related to College
  • Network and support other parents and carers.

The page is managed by the Student Pastoral Coaches from each campus who can answer your queries. Join the DCG Parent and Carer Support Group

How to check your childs progress, attendance and targets – Access the Parents Portal We have a dedicated online Parents Portal for you to log onto. The Parents Portal enables you to view your child’s live attendance, progress reports and SMART Targets. Access the Parents Portal Please note: some parents may not have access to parent portal due to consent not being given. If your child would like to give you consent to access the portal they need to visit Student Services.

Student Bursary’s

Here at DCG, we are committed to helping our students overcome any financial barriers which might prevent them from making the most of their educational opportunities.

If money troubles do start to affect studies with Derby College Group, students could receive additional financial support with study-related costs such as equipment, trips and travel.

If your household income is below £25,500 AFTER tax or if you, are in receipt of Universal Credit or Tax Credits, your young person may be eligible for a student bursary to help with the cost of travel to and from college, lunch while you they are at college and uniform, PPE or text books.

If you have not yet applied and you think you may be eligible, please email the student’s name, ID number and the site they attend to studentsupportfund@derby-college.ac.uk

Parent and Carer Workshops

We’re currently making the final arrangements to give DCG Parents and Carers the opportunity to access a variety of free 30 minute workshops, including: Basics of British Sign language – Restorative Language – Resilience – LGBTQ+ – Mental Wealth – Exam Prep – UCAS application

The first workshop will be held on Wednesday 8th March, 16:00 – 18:00 at the Roundhouse. There will be limited spaces at this event and booking will be essential. We will be emailing further information about this event and how to book very soon!

The Dangers of Frozen Water

Every year children are at risk when they are tempted to play on the ice formed on open waters and adults and themselves at risk as they attempt to save them. Over 50 % of ice related drowning involved an attempted rescue of another person or a dog.

Areas with frozen waters can be beautiful to look at but they are also extremely dangerous. Some useful tips to help you enjoy these areas safely.

Careers

The College Careers team can support all students with a range of things, including: making decisions about their next step options, ways to identify and develop their strengths, skills and abilities in relation to their next step; plus, practical help with making applications and preparing CVs.

Level 3, Year 2 students

The UCAS national deadline 25th January 2023. There are still students wo have not submitted their UCAS forms for checking and sending to UCAS.

As a matter of urgency, please encourage your child to fully complete their online UCAS form (by going to ‘Review and submit’) and then ask them to arrange to meet with their personal tutor to complete the online Hand-in Checklist

If needed, please contact the Careers team for a discussion regarding how we can support your child to successful completion.

As we broke up for the Christmas holiday, over 200 students had applied through UCAS, for a wide range of courses including:

ational Apprenticeship Week

If your son/daughter is considering the option of an apprenticeship, from summer 2023, here’s a reminder of National Apprenticeships Week 2023: 6th-12th February

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) brings together businesses and potential apprentices to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy and gives future apprentices top tips on how to apply and how to succeed!

Activities and events, as part of NAW, will be taking place in College beginning with an event on the 1st February ‘Diversity into Engineering’ (details of all college activity will be communicated next month), but to find out more about the national week, as whole, https://www.nationalapprenticeshipweek.co.uk/

Level 3, Year 1 students

*APPLICATIONS OPEN for the Sutton Trust UK Summer Schools

These are aimed at students who are interested in going to University full time or interested in taking a Degree Apprenticeships. Both programmes are completely free to attend. All costs – including travel, accommodation, food and activities – are paid.

Two Summer Schools are available:

*Full Time study: offers the chance to experience what university life is like, from academic taster sessions to social activities, your child will get the chance to meet like-minded young people from across the UK and explore a subject of their choice at a leading UK university

*Degree Apprenticeship: a chance to gain an in depth understanding of degree apprenticeships, what they involve and whether a degree apprenticeship is the right choice for your child

Students applying to either of the above UK Summer Schools must meet the following criteria:

  • Attend, and have always attended, a state-funded, non fee-paying school/college
  • Be in Year 12 (Year 1 or Level 3, Year 1)
