Attendance and Behaviour

Attendance

Moments matter, attendance counts

College attendance is a critical component of your young person’s journey, impacting their learning, personal development, and future career prospects. It fosters a conducive learning environment, promotes success, and helps build essential skills for your professional and personal lives.

Going on holiday during term time is not a reasonable excuse to miss lessons. We would also expect students to book appointments with the doctor/dentist outside of College wherever possible. Students are expected to provide evidence of any appointments that cause absence. If your young person engages with our Support Services, they can overcome barriers to good attendance and succeed.

Student attendance levels form part of any reference requests for their next steps, whether this is a university application, an application for employment or an Apprenticeship – so help them to stand out and be proud of showcasing good or outstanding attendance.

It is your young person’s responsibility to report an absence via the online form on our website. Completing the form automatically updates the students’ register.

STUDENT ABSENCE/LATENESS REPORTING

Wherever possible, please ask your young person to complete our online DCG Student absence form to report their absence themselves. Alternatively, if you wish to report an absence on their behalf, please email: PastoralCoaches@derby-college.ac.uk

100% attendance = Excellent! Your young person will reap the rewards

85-95% attendance = If something is stopping your young person coming in – let us know, they can speak to their tutor or teacher.

75-85% attendance = Your young person will have 6 sessions with their pastoral coach. Working with them to get back on track. They can also arrange extra resources, study support, or adjustments to help them succeed.

Less than 75% attendance = Your young person will be issued with a verbal warning.

Behaviour

5 Ps of Professional Behaviour

At DCG we have a set of behaviours we expect our students to aspire to; the ‘5 Ps of Professional Behaviour’ which are:

  • Positive: Being open-minded, willing to listen and celebrating diversity.
  • Polite: Speaking respectfully and appropriately.
  • Punctual: Arriving in class ready to begin learning on time.
  • Prepared: Being equipped and ready for lessons with a can-do attitude.
  • Professional: In dress, language and behaviour.

If a student’s behaviour does not meet college expectations, the disciplinary process will be initiated.

The Disciplinary Process

  1. Behaviour Comment – Student Behaviour is recorded on their profile
  2. Verbal Warning – Warning is recorded on their profile
  3. Written Warning – Disciplinary Meeting held with Guardian and Curriculum manager. A letter will go to home address
  4. Final Written Warning – Disciplinary Meeting held with Guardian and Curriculum manager. A letter will go to home address
  5. Exclusion – A recommendation for exclusion will be made and submitted to the Principal

Time-Out

A Time Out is given when a student has put themselves or others at physical or emotional risk (including alleged bullying).

Students will be removed from the college site and also have their ID badge removed and deactivated.

Students cannot return to college until they attend a Time-Out review meeting with Curriculum Manager and Next of Kin.
