Nothing captures the magic of spring quite like meeting newborn lambs. As the countryside comes to life and brighter days return, Lambing Sunday offers families across the region a chance to enjoy a memorable day of new arrivals, hands‑on learning and outdoor fun.
This year, the celebration also features the Animal Unit Open Day, giving visitors the opportunity to explore our specialist Animal Care facilities and meet a huge variety of fascinating species cared for by our students and staff.
A Celebration of Spring and New Life
Lambing season is one of the busiest and most rewarding periods on the College’s working farm. With more than 100 ewes due to give birth, up to 170 lambs are expected this season—each playing an important role in supporting the practical learning experience of students studying agriculture and animal care.
Guests at Lambing Sunday 2026 will be able to:
- Meet newborn lambs
- See older lambs thriving
- Learn about the expert care ewes and lambs receive
- Possibly even witness lambs being born on the day
Adrian Oliver, Farm Manager at Broomfield Hall, who delivers many of the lambs each year, said:
“Lambing season is incredibly special. Welcoming new life onto the farm never loses its magic, and it gives our students hands‑on experience they simply can’t get in a classroom.”
He added:
“For many visitors—especially children—seeing lambs up close creates unforgettable memories. It’s a wonderful way to understand the care, skill and commitment behind modern farming.”
Animal Unit Open Day – Meet Even More Animals
Alongside the lambing sheds, families can explore the Animal Care Unit and meet animals including:
- Meerkats
- Wallabies
- Donkeys
- Chinchillas
- Reptiles
- …and many more

This behind‑the‑scenes experience shows how Derby College Group students develop the skills and knowledge needed for careers in animal care, welfare and land‑based industries.
Refreshments will be available to purchase throughout the day, making this an ideal family trip packed with learning, discovery and springtime joy.
