Entry Requirements

You need to be highly motivated and demonstrate a keen personal interest in pursuing a role in Building Services Engineering for the construction industry. Offers of a place on the course are dependent on your qualifications and a successful interview. You will need:

  • A Level 2 qualification in Electrical Installations (2365-02 or 8202-20)
  • GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths

What will you learn?

T Level courses will feature a technical qualification, which will include:

Year 1 – Core theory: Construction Principles and Technology. Building Services Engineering Systems, Maintenance Principles, Tools, Equipment and Materials.

Year 2 – Occupational Specialism: Installation Tools and Equipment, Scientific Principles, Electrotechnical Wiring Systems, Installation Design, System Maintenance, Inspection and Testing.

Every T Level will include an industry placement with an employer, focused on developing the practical and technical skills required for the occupation. These will last a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) but can last longer. As part of your qualification, employers will offer you the opportunity to work in the construction industry to apply your knowledge and enhance your technical skills within the work environment.

How will you learn?

This course will be delivered on-site with classroom delivery. Assignments and research projects will be set.

What will you need to bring with you?

You will need to purchase various items of equipment, including safety boots for workshop activities, classroom equipment and technical regulation books. The purchase of appropriate student books and e-books is encouraged and guidance on which books to purchase will be given by subject specialists.

How will you be assessed?

Students will be assessed through a mixture of externally set exams and projects. These will bring together all the key theories and practical skills that the students learn throughout their time at College and on work placement.

Year 1
Exam 1: BSE Paper 1
Exam 2: BSE Paper 2

Year 1 is graded A*-E

Year 2
Employer-set project: classroom-based assessment. The project is linked to core skills including problem solving, research, communication and working collaboratively with others.

Occupational Specialism: practical assignment where competencies are graded around a work-based scenario and assessed across three tasks:
• Planning the installation
• Installation, commissioning and decommissioning
• Carrying out maintenance

Students who pass all the elements of their T Level will gain a nationally recognised certificate showing an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction. It will also detail what students have achieved on the course for each component.

Where next?

This course allows for progression to the appropriate Level 4 or 5 in Professional Construction or Electrical Engineering qualification.
Alternatively, and with employment in a qualifying role, progression into a formal apprenticeship in the appropriate specialist pathway could be possible.
