Who is this course for?
This course is for learners interested in starting a career in engineering or manufacturing. It’s ideal for those who want to develop practical skills, technical knowledge, and problem-solving abilities, while improving employability and preparing for progression into further study, apprenticeships, or entry-level engineering roles.
Entry Requirements
You’ll need English and Maths at grade 2, or equivalent, and attend transition events to ensure readiness. This course suits learners who are motivated to work in a practical, technical environment and committed to developing essential academic and engineering skills for future opportunities.
What will you learn?
You will learn the basics of engineering processes, including using hand tools, working with materials, and understanding health and safety. The course also includes English and Maths development through functional skills or GCSE, preparing you for further study or employment in engineering and manufacturing sectors.
How will you learn?
Learning takes place through hands-on practical sessions in a workshop, supported by classroom lessons for theory and safety. You’ll complete real-world tasks, develop technical knowledge, and improve English and Maths skills to support your career progression in engineering or related industries.
What will you need to bring with you?
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): safety boots, high-visibility vest or coveralls, gloves, and any other required items for practical tasks
- Stationery: pens, pencils, and a notebook
- Suitable clothing: comfortable, durable clothes for workshop activities
- Resources for your normal way of working: laptop, overlay, tablet, reading pen, or alternative methods bespoke to you.
How will you be assessed?
- Practical tasks in bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, and painting to demonstrate hands-on skills
- Portfolio of evidence showcasing your progress and completed projects in Digital Skills, Personal Development, and Sustainability.
- Functional Skills or GCSE exams in English and Maths, including final exams for GCSE if you are working towards them
Where next?
- Further study at DCG including Level 1 or 2 Engineering or Manufacturing courses for more advanced skills
- Apprenticeships in Engineering or Fabrication.
- Employment in entry-level technical roles associated with Engineering or Manufacturing
