Entry Requirements

GCSEs in Maths and English grades 4-9 (C or above) or Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills.

What will you learn?

  • Welding Techniques: Mastery of various manual arc welding processes such as TIG, MMA and MIG/MAG.
  • Material Handling: Understanding and working with different materials including Carbon Steel, Low Alloy Steel, Stainless Steel, Nickel Alloys, Aluminium Alloys, Titanium Alloys and Copper Alloys.
  • Technical Specifications: Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications to establish detailed welding process controls.
  • Quality and Safety: Ensuring high standards of quality and adherence to safety regulations, including performing visual inspections and non-destructive testing.
  • Problem Solving: Identifying and addressing issues in the welding process to improve production efficiency.
  • Collaboration: Working effectively both independently and as part of a team, interacting with various professionals in the field.

How will you learn?

Apprentices will attend College on a day-release basis for two years where there will be a mix of practical workshop learning and classroom learning.

What will you need to bring with you?

You will be required to come equipped with the following personal protective equipment (PPE): safety boots, safety glasses, gauntlets, sweatband and company fire retardant overalls. Additionally, you are expected to bring note-taking equipment, such as a pen, paper and/or a laptop. 

How will you be assessed?

You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods. This will include making practical pieces, completing job write-ups, question and answers and witness testimonies from your employer. 

The End Point Assessment (EPA) for the Plate Welder apprenticeship includes several key components:

  1. Practical Assessment: Apprentices must demonstrate their welding skills on various materials and joint configurations, ensuring they meet international standards.
  2. Knowledge Test: This involves a series of questions to assess the apprentice’s understanding of welding processes, materials and safety protocols.
  3. Professional Discussion: A structured interview where apprentices discuss their work, demonstrating their knowledge, skills and behaviours in real-world scenarios.
  4. Portfolio Review: Apprentices present a portfolio of their work, showcasing their competence and development throughout the apprenticeship.

The EPA ensures that apprentices are fully prepared to meet industry standards and excel in their roles as plate welders.

Apprenticeship summary

Apprentices will manually weld plates and structural components to high standards of quality across various sectors, including construction, marine, defence and manufacturing. They will learn multiple manual arc welding processes (TIG, MMA, MIG/MAG) and work with various materials (Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Nickel Alloys, Aluminium Alloys, etc.). 

Training includes interpreting technical drawings, setting up and maintaining welding equipment, and ensuring welds meet international quality standards. There is an emphasis on adhering to safety regulations, performing visual inspections, and conducting non-destructive testing. Apprentices will also identify and address issues in the welding process, contributing to continuous improvement in production. They will work both independently and as part of a team, interacting with various professionals in the field.

Are they any entry requirements for my apprentice?

GCSEs in Maths and English grades 4-9 (C or above) or Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills.

What is required from the employer in the workplace?

The apprentice must hold welder approval certificates validated by a recognised third party organisation that are held by the apprentice, with six-monthly prolongation signatures where appropriate – production welding records showing welding procedure specification, production control card used, method of inspection and acceptance criteria applied to the finished weld, volumetric inspection acceptance report for the identified weld authenticated by a suitably qualified welding inspector or non-destructive testing (NDT) technician.

The employer is to supply a summary of the selected material groups (two) and welding processes (two) applicable to the apprentice. The employer is to supply a suite of employer welding procedure specifications (WPSs) for subsequent selection by the Independent Assessor suitable for the range of materials and processes selected.
