Who is this course for?

This Manufacturing Engineer (degree) apprenticeship is suitable for individuals who:

  • Have a strong educational background: Typically, candidates should have 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Mathematics, English, and a Science, Technology, or Engineering-related subject. Additionally, A Levels at grade C or above in a Mathematical-based subject and a Science, Technology, Engineering, or additional Mathematics-related subject, or 90+ credits in an Engineering BTEC at level 3.
  • Are interested in engineering and manufacturing: The role involves supporting activities that bring design programs into manufacture, focusing on advanced manufacturing techniques and project management skills.
  • Possess key vocational skills: These include producing components using various techniques, creating CAD models, preparing and using machines, and managing engineering project plans.
  • Demonstrate essential occupational behaviours: Such as a safety mindset, strong work ethic, logical approach, problem-solving orientation, quality focus, personal responsibility, clear communication, teamwork, and adaptability.
  • Are committed to continuous learning and development: The apprenticeship includes completing a HND or Foundation Degree, followed by a BSc (Hons) or BEng (Hons) in Engineering, and developing skills in project management, resource management, and engineering processes.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs including Maths, English and Science grades 4-9 (C or above) 

Level 3 knowledge qualification in Engineering such as a BTEC which must include Maths.

This apprenticeship is subject to a curriculum interview. 

What will you learn?

An apprentice in the Manufacturing Engineer (degree) apprenticeship will learn a variety of skills and knowledge, including:

Vocational Skills

  • CAD Models: Creating Computer Aided Design (CAD) models using a CAD system.
  • Software Utilisation: Using computer software packages to assist with and evaluate engineering activities.
  • Project Management: Producing and managing engineering project plans.

Academic Knowledge

  • Mathematics and Science: Fundamental principles for engineers.
  • Materials and Manufacture: Understanding different materials and manufacturing processes.
  • 3D CAD and CAE: Advanced techniques in Computer Aided Design and Engineering.
  • Business Management: Running and managing business-led projects.
  • Product Improvement: Techniques for improving products and managing engineering projects.

Occupational Behaviours

  • Safety Mindset: Strict compliance with safety regulations.
  • Problem Solving: Identifying issues quickly and applying appropriate solutions.
  • Quality Focus: Ensuring work is fit for purpose with attention to detail.

How will you learn?

Apprentices will attend college on a day release basis for three years to complete the degree. Apprentices will also be assessed in the workplace, to build up a portfolio of evidence which will be presented for End Point Assessment (EPA).  

What will you need to bring with you?

You are expected to bring note-taking equipment, such as a pen, paper, and/or a laptop. 

How will you be assessed?

You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods, this will include observations, completing job write ups, question and answers and witness testimonies from your employer. You will complete assignments and exams to achieve the Degree.

The end-point assessment (EPA) for the Manufacturing Engineer (degree) apprenticeship includes:

Assessment Methods:

  • Project Report: A detailed report on a project completed during the apprenticeship.
  • Presentation: A presentation based on the project report, followed by a Q&A session.
  • Professional Discussion: An in-depth discussion covering the apprentice’s knowledge, skills, and behaviours.

Grading: The apprentice will be graded as Pass, Merit, or Distinction based on their performance in the EPA components.

This apprenticeship is subject to a curriculum interview. 

What is required from the employer in the workplace?

Apprentices will require to attend all off the job training during term time to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the standard and complete their mandatory qualification. Employers will actively be involved in the 12 week review process and support target setting to develop the apprentices. Employers will support in preparing the apprentice for their End Point Assessment (EPA).
