Lexis

Lexis is a full-time programme for 16 to 18-year-old learners whose first language is not English. Its overall objective is to help learners improve their English and gain qualifications to enable them to progress into further education or employment.

No formal qualifications are required. Students are interviewed and their English language skills are assessed before they are offered a place on the programme.

The course is free to the majority of students, unless they are classed as an international student (more details available on request).

The main qualification, City & Guilds ESOL, is delivered for ten hours per week. The main programme is supported each week with Edexcel Functional Skills Maths for four hours. Essential Digital Skills and Employability are all incorporated into the 17-hours-per-week full-time programme.

The Tutorial programme supports learners’ personal development, wellbeing, independence, citizenship and progression into further study or employment.

Following their initial assessment, students are placed into groups according to their level of English. This will range from Entry 1 to Level 1.

This course will be delivered on-site.

English and maths are assessed by an end-of-year exam.

Students can advance to the next level of the Lexis ESOL course or – once they have gained the appropriate level of English – can progress to other study programmes within the College or go out into the world of work.
