Course Information for Students

The broad purpose of the Early Years Practitioner (EYP) occupation is to work and interact directly with children on a day-to-day basis, supporting the planning and delivery of activities, purposeful play opportunities and educational programmes within the ethos of the setting. An EYP works as part of a professional team ensuring the welfare and care of children under the guidance and supervision of an Early Years Educator, teacher or other suitably qualified professional in the workforce.

This apprenticeship entails:

  • A Level 2 Diploma
  • Maths and English Level 1 Functional Skills with a Level 2 uplift
  • End-point assessment
  • 20% off-the-job training
  • One day at College to learn the theory of being an Early Years Practitioner.
  • Full support from an assessor who is also your tutor

You need:

  • to be working in an early years environment with a range of children from babies to five-year-olds
  • a good standard of English and Maths
  • an ambition to pursue an early years career
  • Level 1 Maths and English uplifted to Level 2
  • Off-the-job training hours
  • End-point assessment
  • Level 2 Diploma covering working in partnership with carers and parents; safeguarding and child protection; using play to support children’s learning and growth; use and importance of hygiene; communication and wellbeing of children; and health, safety and wellbeing of  children
  • You will learn a range of theoretical knowledge about health and safety, hazards and regulations relating to looking after babies and children – including signs and symptoms of injuries and safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • You will also develop professional behaviour, communication techniques, knowledge of nutrition and hygiene, and the ability to keep documentary records.

The apprenticeship will be delivered in the workplace and on-site. 

You will need a laptop for access to your course work.

Further Study

You could consider the Level 3 Early Years Advanced Practitioner qualification.

Course Information for Employers

The apprenticeship entails:

  • An end-point assessment
  • Of-The-Job training (6 hours per week)
  • One day at College to learn the theory of being an Early Years Practitioner
  • Full support from an assessor who is also the apprentice’s tutor

The apprentice should be employed in a nursery looking after a range of children from babies up to five-year-olds.

The employer should provide support, training, and paid leave to attend College on a Tuesday.

The apprentice will learn a range of theoretical knowledge about health and safety, hazards and regulations relating to looking after babies and children. This includes signs and symptoms that a baby is injured, plus the  safeguarding policies and procedures to follow.

They will also build their professional behaviour, communication techniques, knowledge of nutrition and hygiene, and ability to keep documentary records.

Theory class is once a week at college, day tbc when apprentice starts. 

If the apprentice needs to complete their Functional Skills, that will also take place on this day. 

The day release should be paid as part of their working week.

They will need a laptop.

They can consider a Level 3 apprenticeship programme.
