This qualification is ideal for automotive technicians, vehicle maintenance professionals, and public service personnel (such as emergency responders) who work with or around electric and hybrid vehicles. It’s particularly suited to individuals who already hold a Level 3 qualification in vehicle maintenance and repair and are looking to upskill in electric/hybrid technologies.

Entry Requirements
Learner entry for these qualifications should be assessed on an individual basis. Selection criteria for entry should take into account each applicant’s existing academic/vocational qualifications and experience in working in the retail automotive industry.
Although not mandatory, it is recommended that learners will have 3 GCSEs, or Scottish Standard Grade/Intermediate in Mathematics, English and a Science-based subject.

Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities
- Learn how to safely carry out routine maintenance on electric and hybrid vehicles.
- Includes procedures for isolating and reinstating high-voltage systems, and connecting alternative power sources.
- Assessed through an online test and practical tasks.
Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement
- Develop the skills to diagnose, repair, and replace components within electric/hybrid vehicle systems.
- Covers battery disconnection, component testing, and system reinstatement.
- Assessed through knowledge-based assessments and practical demonstrations.

Learners may also access digital resources and online assessments, with support available both in person and remotely.

All students must arrived on site with their own personal protective clothing (overalls and safety boots).

- Delivered on-site under invigilation by an IMI-approved assessor.
- Duration: 60 minutes

Practical Assessments
- Conducted in Derby College’s automotive workshops using electric/hybrid vehicles or approved training rigs.
- You’ll be observed performing tasks such as:
- Isolating and reinstating high-voltage systems
- Disconnecting and reconnecting batteries
- Testing and replacing components
- Resetting vehicle systems post-repair
- Assessor feedback is recorded during each task.
Knowledge-Based Assessments
- Linked to the unit Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement.
- Delivered in written or verbal format, depending on the centre’s approach.
