Course Information for Students

Who is this course for?

This qualification is for those individuals who wish to develop their knowledge, understanding and awareness in the principles of safely installing timber fire door sets and assemblies to ensure fire door safety.

Candidates most suited to this course will ideally be qualified carpenters and joiners with experience of hanging doors or subject specialists involved in fire door related quality and compliance.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must be aged 16 or above and should be capable of achieving a Level 3 qualification. 

As a minimum you must meet at least one of the below criteria:

  • Maths and English at GCSE grade 3 or the equivalent
  • Achievement of a Level 2 qualification
  • Experienced carpenter
  • Experienced joiner

What will you learn?

During this three-day course you will cover the following:

  • Introduction, Certification and the Regulatory Reform
  • Door Sets, Assemblies and Regulations
  • Passive Fire Protection
  • Fire Doors and the Building Regulations
  • Pre-Installation – FD30 or FD20 Fire Doors?
  • Pre-Installation Glazing Checks
  • Pre-Installation Fire Intumescent
  • Installation of Fire Door Frames and Linings
  • Installation of Hardware
  • Installation of the Door
  • Post-Installation Safety Checks
  • Post-Installation Maintenance
  • Fire Doors in Houses of Multiple Occupancy (HMO)

On successful completion of this course you will receive a City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Fire Door Safety (6581-30).

How will you learn?

The delivery of the course will be face to face in the classroom.

All teaching resources will be available via padlet and Microsoft Teams: you will be given access at the start of the course.

While we make every endeavour to run programmes as advertised, we reserve the right to cancel those which do not enrol sufficient numbers to make them viable.

What will you need to bring with you?

As the course is primarily theory based, in the classroom you will require:

  • Notebook and pen
  • A memory stick if you wish to receive the course content electronically

How will you be assessed?

On completion of the learning phase there will be an online 40-question multiple choice exam, which is broken down into four topic areas:

1.    Fundamental principles of fire door assemblies and door sets

2.    Fundamental principles of fire door assemblies and door sets

3.    Principles of installing timber fire door sets and assemblies

4.    Fundamental post-installation requirements for timber fire door sets and assemblies

You will receive ten questions on each of the above topics and will require 70% or more to receive a pass.

Where next?

  • The holder of this qualification will be able to hang fire doors in compliance with the building regulations and will be able to inspect and advise on existing fire doors.
  • This qualification can be used to support the Gateway knowledge requirements of the Level 3 Advanced Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship. (ST0263).
