Course Information for Students
Who is this course for?
Keen to learn more about topics such as tractor and machinery operation, forage crop and grassland management, cattle, sheep, pig and livestock nutrition, health and welfare? Interested in developing your skills to work safely and effectively on a farm? If yes, then this course is for you.
Entry Requirements
You need to be highly motivated and demonstrate a keen interest in your chosen subject. You will need:
- A minimum of three GCSEs at grade D/3 or above including English and/or Maths
OR
- An Introductory Diploma in a related subject
You will have an interview and initial assessment. Parents and carers are welcome to attend the interview, but not the initial assessment.
If you are a mature learner, we may be able to take into account your previous experience in your chosen subject.
What will you learn?
The course will cover:
- Environmental Management
- Land-based Business Studies
- Work Experience
- Functional Skills
You will also take three specialist units, which will be discussed at interview and will cover livestock production and husbandry, crop and grassland management and tractor/attachments use and maintenance. You will also be studying GCSE Maths and English if you have not already got a grade C/4 in these.
How will you learn?
This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.
What will you need to bring with you?
You will be required to supply your own:
- Steel toe-capped boots or wellingtons
- Derby College Group overalls (these will be available to purchase at enrolment)
- Derby College Group uniform
- Outdoor clothing
- Writing materials
How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed continually throughout the course. This will be done via assessment of your practical skills and theoretical tasks.
You will be involved in a range of practical and theoretical learning activities as well as completing a minimum of six weeks’ work experience.
There will be a written exam at the end of the course.
Where next?
If you do well in your studies, it may be possible to progress to a Level 3 Technical Diploma in Agriculture or related subject. However, you must have a minimum of a Merit grade to progress.
