Course Information for Students

Who is this course for?

This course is for Level 2 students who want something extra and the opportunity to put themselves in the position to obtain a real career opportunity in a large public sector organisation.  BTEC First qualifications are designed for use in colleges, schools and the workplace as introductory courses for learners who want to study in the context of a vocational sector.  This qualification will allow students the chance of an enhanced industry placement alongside their qualification so they gain a deeper insight into an organisation and how the organisation functions.

The knowledge, understanding and skills gained by studying a BTEC First will aid progression to employment by preparing students to enter the workplace or further study.  This qualification can also give progression to a Level 3 course or an apprenticeship/job/career opportunity.

BTECs are vocationally-related qualifications where students develop knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. They are popular and effective because they enable students to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace.  This qualification will be tailored to meet the needs of an employer and students will work closely with representatives from this organisation on a regular basis through the setting of additional projects, tasks and activities alongside the qualification.

Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate employability and transferable skills including team-working; problem-solving; communication; working from a prescribed brief; working to deadlines; presenting information effectively; and accurately completing administrative tasks and processes. BTEC Firsts motivate learners and open doors to progression to further study and responsibility in the workplace.

Entry Requirements

You need:

  • GCSE English Language at grade 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths at grade 3 or above
  • Two further GCSEs graded 3 or above

A vocational qualification would be considered but it should be accompanied by GCSE English Language at grade 4 and GCSE Maths graded 3 or above.

Students are able to study GCSE Maths during this qualification.

Other BTEC Level 2 qualifications are available, based on your qualifications.

What will you learn?

The Pearson BTEC Level 2 First Certificate:

  • has mandatory and optional units
  • has two units that are externally assessed: Pearson sets and marks these assessments
  • is graded based on Pass, Merit or Distinction

Mandatory units are:

  • Enterprise in the Business World
  • Finance for Business
  • Principles of Marketing

Additional units you will study are:

  • Public Sector Business
  • Customer Service
  • Promoting a Brand
  • Recruitment and Selection
  • Building Successful Business Teams

You will also apply your learning to real projects, tasks and activities that are directly linked to a public sector organisation.

How will you learn?

This course will be delivered on-site at the Roundhouse campus.

What will you need to bring with you?

There is an additional cost for the text book and exam revision guide (students are advised to purchase their own copy).

How will you be assessed?

The Pearson BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Business includes two externally-assessed units (Marketing and Finance). This will help learners as they progress either into higher levels of vocational learning or to related academic qualifications.

The remaining units are internally assessed (assignments). Internal assessment allows learners to develop a wider range of skills and provides evidence towards meeting the unit assessment criteria. Evidence for assessment can be generated through a range of activities, including role play, practical performance and verbal presentations.

The employer project, tasks and activities will be assessed by the employer as well as teaching delivery staff.
