Course Information for Students

Who is this course for?

The Level 2 Diploma in Sport and Leisure Studies programme is designed for students who regularly participate in sport and fitness and have a keen interest in working within the sport industry.

The study programme includes mandatory sports units such as anatomy, nutrition, coaching and fitness testing. It also includes GSCE English and Maths, tutorial, work experience and sport enrichment.

Students applying internally need to evidence high levels of attendance and to be motivated to achieve their English and Maths qualifications.

Entry Requirements

You will need to complete an interview and show a desire to achieve both the Maths and English GCSEs as this will form a larger proportion of your study. The entry requirements for this course are that the majority of your GCSEs should be graded at 3, with English Language or Maths at 2 or 3.

The study programme will focus on the achievement of English and Maths GCSEs. You are expected to maintain high standards of discipline, punctuality and attendance. It is essential that you work to the deadlines set or you risk the chance of not achieving your programme of study or not being selected for competitive fixtures.

Practical sessions are compulsory, so you must be physically able to take part in both indoor and outdoor sessions. You will also be expected to undertake work experience which may involve weekend activity or involvement in AoC officiating at regional or national competitons.

What will you learn?

The course is made up of a number of units and topics which can include:

  • GCSE English and Maths
  1. Sport Facilities Operations (54 GHL)
  2. Participating in and Understanding Sport (54 GHL)
  3. Anatomy and Physiology (54 GHL)
  4. Working with Participants with Disabilities in Sport (+ Sport Leaders 2) (54 GHL)
  5. Careers in Sport (54 GHL)
  6. Physical Preparation for Sport (54 GHL)

It also includes a tutorial session to monitor your progress, set targets, support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills. The completion of your GCSEs will enable you to apply for higher level courses.

How will you learn?

This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.

There are practical sessions in which you will be expected to take part and others that you are expected to lead.

We encourage learners to bring their own laptop to aid their studies.

What will you need to bring with you?

You will need to have a uniform that is worn every day and when you are on work experience. The minimum expectation for the uniform is that you wear a plain black T-shirt or polo shirt and sweatshirt etc. DCG-branded uniform packs can be purchased at a variety of prices depending on the package chosen. It is expected that all learners purchase a minimum of one T-shirt.

You will need to bring suitable footwear and kit for the activities set throughout the year.

All learners are advised to have a tablet or laptop to aid them with their studies.

There may be additional costs incurred for selected trips and visits

How will you be assessed?

You will build a portfolio based around evidence generated by the various assessment methods in each unit. You are expected to work on multiple assessments at any one time. You will be assessed through practical demonstrations, logbooks and performance records, written reports and essays, presentations, workbooks, discussions and VIVAs.

Maths and English will be assessed through a final exam.

You undertake six units – two each term – to complete the Diploma and you need to pass all six units.

Where next?

Further study

Your progression is linked to your achievement of GCSE English and Maths. You may then consider applying for the:

  • Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sports Coaching and Development
  • Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy
  • Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction
