Course Information for Students

You will be provided with a foundation in the broad range of skills required to work competently within the arboriculture industry. Practical and theory skills will be developed in the workplace and at Derby College.

This qualification is for anyone aged 16 or over with a job or work placement as a forest worker. You don’t need any previous experience to get started.

You must be in employment and committed to a career in the arboriculture industry.

You must be in employment and be committed to a career in the arboriculture industry. Entry qualifications are flexible and can include a relevant Level 2 qualification in Arboriculture or a minimum of three GCSEs at grade C/D (3/4) or above, preferably including English Language, Maths and a Science.

You will undergo an initial assessment before starting the programme to ensure that you are capable of achieving the outcomes and have an interest in this area of work.

Apprentices without Level 1 English and Maths will need to achieve this level and take Level 2 tests prior to the end-point assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement, the apprenticeship’s English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3.

This programme will enable you to develop the skills in forestry and arboriculture that employers are looking for.

Pathways include forestry establishment, maintenance and harvesting, green wood trades, and arboriculture.

The apprenticeship will be delivered in the workplace and on-site at Broomfield Hall with a one day a week attendance requirement.

You will need full PPE which should be provided by your employer, including safety boots, trousers and helmet with ear defence and visor, and waterproofs. You will also need writing materials.

For apprentices over the age of 19, an employer contribution is required.

On-programme assessment includes:

  • Apprentice journal: the apprentice should record experiences gained through the learning
  • Portfolio of evidence to demonstrate practical ability and theoretical understanding
  • Written and practical tests: designed to prepare the apprentice for the end-point assessment and test seasonal elements
  • Employer appraisals: to monitor performance
  • Completion of relevant NPTC’s as outlined for the standard
  • Emergency First Aid at Work

The End-point Assessment consists of:

  • A synoptic practical assessment containing a range of practical activities
  • Professional discussion
  • Online multiple-choice test of knowledge

The programme enables you to develop the skills in forestry and arboriculture that employers are looking for.
