Course Information for Students

This course is ideal for beginners who are completely new to hairdressing and want to build confidence, practical skills, and professional behaviours. It suits school leavers, adult learners, and anyone looking to explore the hair industry before progressing to a Level 2 qualification.

Applicants should have a positive attitude to learning and an interest in the hair industry. A minimum Grade 3 in either Maths or English (or equivalent) and either a grade 1 or 2 in the other is required to support your progression. Good communication skills, reliability, and enthusiasm for practical work are essential.

During this Level 1 Hairdressing course, you will begin developing the core practical skills and knowledge needed for future study in the hair industry. You will learn how to carry out shampooing and conditioning services, understand basic scalp and hair analysis, and create simple styling and finishing looks, including plaits, blow‑drying techniques, and basic up‑styles.

You will also study an introductory unit on working in the hair industry, focusing on professional image, customer service, and the principles of health, safety, and hygiene in the salon. The Create an Image unit allows you to design and complete a full hair look using styling techniques, helping you develop creativity and confidence in presenting your work.

Learning combines practical sessions, theory lessons, and creative project‑based activities. You will take part in project‑based learning, such as planning and producing your Create an Image look. Throughout the course, you will build a portfolio of evidence, showcasing your practical work, written tasks, and achievements.

Practical skills are assessed through observations in the training salon, giving you hands‑on experience with real clients and peers. You will also complete assignments and written tasks to develop your understanding of theory and industry expectations. Some units may include short online or paper‑based exams covering health and safety and basic hairdressing knowledge. This blended approach ensures strong practical and theoretical development.

You will need a professional hairdressing uniform, closed‑toe salon shoes, and basic stationery for theory work. A folder is required to organise and build your portfolio of evidence. Jewellery kept to a minimum for safety. Any kit requirements will be shared at enrolment.

You will be assessed through practical observations, assignments, short exams, and ongoing portfolio building. Practical assessments take place in the training salon, where you demonstrate techniques such as shampooing, conditioning, and styling. Written tasks and theory tests check your understanding of safe working practices and basic hairdressing concepts

After completing Level 1, you can progress to the VTCT Level 2 Certificate or  Diploma in Hairdressing (depending on Maths and English grades), where you will develop cutting, colouring, and styling skills. Many learners also move into related areas such as Level 2 Barbering, Hair & Media Makeup, or Apprenticeships. This course provides the essential foundation for your journey into the hair industry.
