Introduction to Lexis – April Start

The Introduction to Lexis programme is a full-time programme for 16 to 18-year-old students whose first language is not English. This programme is for students who may arrive in the UK during the course of the year or who have relocated during the year. The programme also welcomes ESOL students who have been unable to obtain formal qualifications while at school.

Course Information for Students

The Introduction to Lexis programme is a full-time programme for 16 to 18-year-old students whose first language is not English. This programme is for students who may arrive in the UK during the course of the year or who have relocated during the year. The programme also welcomes ESOL students who have been unable to obtain formal qualifications while at school.

The overall aim of the programme is to help students improve their English and gain qualifications to enable them to progress to further education or employment.

No formal qualifications are required. Students are interviewed and their English language skills are assessed before being offered a place on the programme.

The course is free to the majority of students, unless they are classed as an international student (more details available on request.

The ESOL programme is delivered for 12 hours per week. The development of the students’ English skills is supported by a range of activities designed to engage the students with formal education in the United Kingdom. These activities include personal enrichment, community engagement and tutorial support.

This course will be delivered on-site.

Students are continuously assessed throughout the programme and those who demonstrate sufficient progress may be entered for unitised ESOL qualifications at an appropriate level.

Students can advance to the main Lexis ESOL programme. Once students have gained the appropriate level of English, they can progress to other study programmes within the College.  Some students, with their improved English skills, may go out into the world of work.
