Course Information for Students

This course is ideal for learners who are wanting to begin a journey into the dog grooming industry. It will build your skills and knowledge in dog grooming so that you are able to work under supervision in a dog grooming salon. The course is run within a commercial salon at the College, allowing a more realistic insight into a dog grooming career.

It is mostly a practical course. However, there is some theory throughout the course also.

You must have a keen interest in dog grooming and have a willingness to work hard towards the course. An initial interview will be required to assess whether you have the devotion to a dog grooming career and to check your competency.

There is a £220 deposit to be paid – if you are successful in the interview – to cover kit fees.

Entry requirements include:

  • Maths and English GCSE grade D/3 and above.

You will learn a range of skills which include:

  • Preparing and grooming dogs prior to bathing
  • Bathing and drying dogs ready for styling
  • Knowledge on how to maintain a range of salon equipment
  • Basics of clipping and scissoring skills
  • Maintaining cleanliness and standards in a grooming salon
  • Canine first aid

This course takes place in the Dog Grooming building at Broomfield Hall.

You will be required to provide a few items during the course:

  • Sensible footwear (closed-toe shoes)
  • Sensible clothing (jeans/trousers)
  • Notepad and pens
  • Folder
  • Lunch and refreshments (food is available on-site too)

All other equipment that is needed will be provided.

There are both practical and theoretical assessments during this course. The practical exams will be held within the College grooming salon and completed during the course. There is then a final multiple-choice online exam towards the end of the course.

You can discover a range of courses for further development, such as the:

  • Level 2 Dog Groomer Apprenticeship – Standard
  • Advanced Technical Diploma in Animal Management – Level 3

There are also lots of one-day courses that can expand your skills and knowledge. For more information, go to the Derby College Group website at
