Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course. You don’t need any prior qualifications, skills, or experience in motor vehicle services to enrol. However, all applicants will be invited to attend an interview to assess their suitability and motivation for the course. This ensures the programme is the right fit for your goals and learning needs.
What will you learn?
As part of this course, students will complete the mandatory Health and Safety in the Automotive Environment unit, gaining essential knowledge of safe working practices, tools, and equipment used in motor vehicle workshops. They will also study the optional Introduction to Spark Ignition Fuel Systems unit, which introduces the principles of petrol engines and fuel system components. Together, these units provide a strong foundation in automotive health and safety, mechanical tools, and petrol engine systems. This is ideal for building practical skills and preparing for further progression.
How will you learn?
All sessions for this course are delivered on-site at Derby College Group’s Roundhouse Campus. You’ll learn through a mix of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical work in the College’s fully equipped motor vehicle workshop. This blended approach ensures you gain both the knowledge and real-world skills needed for the automotive industry.
What will you need to bring with you?
Students must purchase and provide their own personal protective clothing. Coveralls and steel toe-capped boots should be worn at all times in the workshop. An Automotive Academy embroidered polo shirt must be worn and can be purchased during enrolment.
How will you be assessed?
To achieve the Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Award in Motor Vehicle Services, students will need to build a portfolio of evidence throughout the course. This portfolio will include a variety of assessment materials that demonstrate both practical and theoretical knowledge, covering areas such as health and safety, use of tools and equipment, and understanding of petrol engines and fuel systems. The portfolio is an essential part of the qualification and showcases each learner’s progress and competence.
