Course Information for Students

This course is ideal for individuals passionate about equine science and seeking a career in rehabilitation, performance, or coaching. Whether you’re aiming to work in equine therapy, training, or yard management, this programme provides a strong foundation in both academic and practical skills. You will benefit from small group sizes that enables a more personalised university experience to help you achieve your goals and ambitions. 

Delivered at Derby College Group’s Broomfield Hall Campus, the course includes: 

  • Engaging lectures
  • Practical sessions in laboratories and the equestrian centre
  • One day per week of work-based learning
  • Field trips to apply theory in real-world settings

You’ll also explore event management, marketing, and social media strategies to support entrepreneurship and business growth. 

The programme supports the development of maths and English skills, which are embedded throughout to enhance academic success, career readiness, and life skills. 

Course Overview 

This programme offers both riding and non-riding options and is delivered through a blend of classroom learning, practical experience, and industry placements. You’ll be supported by a highly qualified teaching team and benefit from guest speakers who bring current industry insights. 

Students receive: 

  • Eight hours of taught sessions per week
  • A minimum of eight hours of self-study per week
  • Access to the University of Derby Online (UDO) platform, Derby College Group Learning Resources Centre, University of Derby library, and College Moodle pages

Upon completion, you’ll be awarded a Foundation Degree from the University of Derby

 This course is regulated by the Office for Students (OfS)

The programme will run with a minimum of six students

Academic Year Structure 

The academic year spans 33 weeks for maintenance loan purposes. Of this, 26 weeks will be delivered through direct teaching, with the remaining time allocated to induction, tutorials, research, directed study, and reading weeks. 

To apply for this programme, applicants must meet the following criteria: 

Academic Qualifications 

You should have one of the following: 

  • 64 UCAS points from an Extended Diploma or National Diploma in Equine Management, or another relevant subject area such as Animal Management
  • At least two A-levels or AS-levels in science-related subjects, equal to at least 64 UCAS points
  • A GNVQ/NVQ Level 3 in an equine-related subject
  • Relevant and comprehensive industry experience may also be considered

You must also hold: 

  • Four GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A–C)* or equivalent, including English, Maths, and Science

Additional Requirements 

  • All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss qualifications, experience, and suitability for the course
  • If selecting the riding option, a riding assessment will be required prior to the start of the programme
    • Applicants must be riding at BHS Stage 1 standard and working towards BHS Stage 2
    • Please note: there is a 13 stone weight limit for riding assessments, including the weight of PPE
  • BHS qualifications are advantageous but not essential
  • Applicants aged 18 years or older at the start of the course are eligible
  • All admissions are subject to approval by the University of Derby

We welcome applications from hardworking, motivated, and passionate individuals, including those with substantial industry experience who may not hold formal qualifications. These applicants will be interviewed and may be asked to complete a task to assess academic potential.

You’ll also continue to develop your Maths and English skills, which are embedded throughout the curriculum to support academic success, career progression, and life skills.

This course is delivered on-site at Derby College Group’s Broomfield Hall Campus, offering a hands-on and immersive learning experience. You’ll benefit from: 

  • Face-to-face lectures
  • Practical sessions in laboratories and the equestrian centre
  • Work-based learning
  • Field trips to apply theory in real-world settings

This approach ensures a rich blend of academic study and vocational training.

To fully participate in the course, you’ll need: 

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for practical work – approx. £100
  • Contribution to industry-relevant trips and visits – approx. £150, payable at the time of each activity

Optional Costs: Students may choose to pursue British Horse Society (BHS) qualifications alongside their Foundation Degree. Associated costs include: 

  • BHS Gold Membership
  • BHS Stage 1 (including Ride Safe)
  • BHS Stage 2 (including Stage 2 Teach)
  • BHS Stage 3 (including Stage 3 Teach)

These optional qualifications can enhance employability and support career progression. 

Assessment methods are varied and designed to reflect industry practices while developing transferable skills. These include: 

  • Written assignments
  • Practical assessments
  • Reports
  • Group presentations
  • Poster presentations
  • Examinations

Maths and English skills are embedded throughout the course to support academic success and future progression.

Upon successful completion of this four-year Foundation Degree, you’ll be equipped to pursue or advance a career in a wide range of equestrian roles, including: 

  • Equine rehabilitation and therapy
  • Yard management
  • Coaching and training
  • Event and business management
  • Self-employment in equine services

You may also choose to progress to a Level 6 BSctop-up degree, specialising in areas such as Equine Exercise and Physiology or Training and Developing Horses

Throughout the programme, you will continue to develop your Maths and English skills, supporting both your academic journey and career readiness.
