Entry Requirements
GCSEs in Maths, English and Science grades 4-9 (C or above) or Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills.
Level 3 knowledge qualification in Engineering such as a BTEC which must include Maths.
Acceptance onto this apprenticeship is subject to a curriculum interview.
What will you learn?
An apprentice in the Engineering Manufacturing Technician program will learn a variety of skills and knowledge areas, including:
- Problem Solving: Techniques like root cause analysis and process failure mode effects analysis.
- Quality Management: Understanding systems like ISO9001 and principles of quality control.
- Manufacturing Methods: Knowledge of different methods such as machining, joining, and forming.
- Lean Manufacturing: Tools and techniques like Six Sigma, Kaizen, and 5S.
- Project Management: Techniques for managing projects, including risk mapping and stakeholder matrices.
- Technical Documentation: Creating and maintaining documents like build manuals, standard operating instructions, and cost analysis reports.
- Data Analysis: Collecting and interpreting data to make informed decisions and generate reports.
- Health and Safety: Adhering to statutory and organisational health and safety regulations.
These skills prepare apprentices for roles such as costing engineer, manufacturing quality engineer, process engineer, and test and commissioning engineer.
How will you learn?
Apprentices will attend college on a day release basis for two years to complete the Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ). Apprentices will also be assessed in the workplace, to build up a portfolio of evidence which will be presented for End Point Assessment (EPA).
What will you need to bring with you?
You are expected to bring note-taking equipment, such as a pen, paper, and/or a laptop.
How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods, this will include observations, completing job write ups, question and answers and witness testimonies from your employer. You will complete assignments to achieve the HTQ.
The End-Point Assessment (EPA) for the Engineering Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship includes:
- Knowledge Test: A multiple-choice test covering the technical knowledge required for the role.
- Practical Observation: An observation of the apprentice performing tasks in their workplace to demonstrate their skills and competencies.
- Professional Discussion: A structured discussion between the apprentice and an independent assessor, focusing on the apprentice’s portfolio of evidence and their understanding of the role.
These assessments ensure that the apprentice has the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviours to perform effectively in their role.

What is required from the employer in the workplace?
Apprentices will require to attend all off the job training during term time to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the standard and complete their mandatory qualification. Employers will actively be involved in the 12 week review process and support target setting to develop the apprentices. Employers will support in preparing the apprentice for their End Point Assessment (EPA).
