Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship is designed for individuals aiming to become Electrical or Electronic Technical Support Engineers. Here are the key points:

  • Job Roles: graduates can expect to work as Electricians, Electrical Engineers, Technical Support Engineers, or in similar roles.

  • Professional Recognition: meets the standards for initial registration as an Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) with the Engineering Council.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs including Maths, English and Science grades 4-9 (C or above) 

Level 3 knowledge qualification in Engineering such as a BTEC which must include Maths.

This apprenticeship is subject to a curriculum interview. 

What will you learn?

You will learn a wide range of skills and knowledge, including:

Vocational Skills:

  • Core Engineering Skills: Manual dexterity, hand fitting techniques, CAD drawing, and using lathes and milling machines.
  • Electrical and Electronic Skills: Wiring and testing electrical equipment, assembling and testing electronic circuits.
  • Software Skills: Using computer software for engineering activities and producing project plans.
  • Maintenance Skills: Maintaining and improving electrical equipment and systems.

Academic Knowledge:

  • Foundation Degree: Covers mathematics, science, materials, 3D CAD, business-led projects, actuators, sensors, and electronic principles.
  • BEng (Hons): Expands on foundation knowledge with specialised modules in engineering.

Professional Skills:

  • Project Management: Managing engineering activities, producing specifications, and solving technical problems.
  • Manufacturing and Testing: Involvement in product manufacturing and testing.
  • Technical and Commercial Management: Planning and managing tasks and resources.

How will you learn?

Apprentices will attend College on a day release basis for three years to complete the degree. Apprentices will also be assessed in the workplace to build up a portfolio of evidence which will be presented for the End Point Assessment (EPA).  

What will you need to bring with you?

You are expected to bring note-taking equipment, such as a pen, paper, and/or a laptop. 

How will you be assessed?

You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods. This will include observations, completing job write-ups, question and answers and witness testimonies from your employer. You will complete assignments and exams to achieve the Degree.

The End Point Assessment (EPA) for the Electrical or Electronic Technical Support Engineer apprenticeship includes the following key components:

  1. Knowledge Test: Assesses the apprentice’s understanding of core engineering principles and practices.
  2. Practical Observation: Evaluates the apprentice’s ability to perform tasks and demonstrate skills in a real or simulated work environment.
  3. Professional Discussion: A structured interview to assess the apprentice’s knowledge, skills and behaviours, including their ability to reflect on their performance and experiences.
  4. Project Presentation: The apprentice presents a project they have completed, demonstrating their ability to apply their learning to real-world scenarios.

Are they any entry requirements for my apprentice?

What is required from the employer in the workplace?

Apprentices will be required to attend all off-the-job training during term time to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the standard and complete their mandatory qualification. Employers will actively be involved in the 12-week review process and support target setting to develop the apprentices. Employers will provide support in preparing the apprentice for their End Point Assessment (EPA).
