Course Information for Students

The city of Derby and the surrounding area is world renowned for its engineering and manufacturing industry and is populated with world-leading employers and their high-quality supply chains.

The engineering sector is also still growing at a considerable rate, particularly with the development of new technologies which, in turn, has led to skill shortages and demand for high-performing engineers.

Using the latest suite of qualifications, the one-year EAL Level 2 Certificate In Engineering Operations has been designed to support your development as an engineer, leading to a highly rewarding and well-paid career in this sector. It also offers a seamless transition of credits into an engineering apprenticeship and will start to prepare candidates for university-level study.

You will need to have achieved a grade 4/C in either GCSE Maths or GCSE English Language.

In addition, GCSE grade 3 minimum is preferred in the following GCSEs:

  • Science/Technology/Electronics

This qualification provides students with knowledge and understanding of a blend of skills, knowledge and occupational behaviours required across a range of engineering occupations. The qualification covers core knowledge and skills required for entry to the engineering and manufacturing sectors.

The qualification is obtained by completion of one mandatory unit and at least three optional units.

Mandatory Unit:

  • Engineering Environment Awareness

At least three options will be chosen from:

  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Engineering Maintenance Techniques
  • Fabrication and Welding Principles
  • Fitting and Assembly Techniques
  • Manual Turning Techniques
  • Manual Milling Techniques
  • Computer Numerical Control

This course will be delivered on-site.

In addition to regular writing materials and a scientific calculator, specific PPE may need to be purchased for selected activities.

Methods used are:

  • On-screen multiple choice examinations
  • Centre-marked written and practical assessments

Further Study

On completion of the Level 2 Certificate in Engineering Operations, you can progress to the BTEC Level 3 Award In Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.

Careers

Alternatively, and with employment in a qualifying role, an apprenticeship in engineering would be possible: this qualification can be used as credits/evidence towards the apprenticeship knowledge elements.
