Course Information for Students

Derby and its surrounding area are globally recognised for engineering and manufacturing, home to world-leading employers and high-quality supply chains. The sector continues to grow rapidly, driven by emerging technologies and resulting in skill shortages and high demand for talented engineers.
 

Delivered through our Engineering Academy, this one-year Level 2 qualification is designed for students aged 16+ who are eager to pursue a career in engineering or manufacturing. Located in a region steeped in engineering innovation, the course offers a strong foundation for entering one of the UK’s most vital and expanding industries.


Combining practical training with essential technical knowledge, the programme prepares students for employment, apprenticeships, or further study, including progression to a Level 3 qualification in engineering. With a focus on developing workplace-ready skills, behaviours, and understanding, students also gain valuable insight into the world of work, making this course an ideal first step toward a rewarding and well-paid engineering career.
 

Prior achievement of the following GCSEs and grades is necessary:

  • GCSE Grade 4 in either Maths or English, and at least a Grade 3 in the other subject.
  • A keen interest in engineering, manufacturing, or technical support.
  • A positive attitude towards practical and theoretical learning.
     

You’ll develop a blend of practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional behaviours essential for today’s engineering workplaces. This qualification covers key competencies required across various engineering roles, including:

  • Health and safety in engineering and manufacturing
  • Environmental awareness and sustainable practices
  • Communication and teamwork in technical environments
  • Workplace organisation and continuous improvement
  • Engineering maths and science fundamentals
  • Practical skills in assembly, fabrication, and finishing
  • Quality control, inspection, and problem-solving
  • Project planning and execution
     

This course will be delivered on-site, and learning takes place through a combination of:

  • Classroom-based lessons
  • Practical workshops in industry-standard facilities
  • Group projects and teamwork activities
  • Simulated workplace scenarios
  • Independent study and research
     
  • Standard stationery (pens, pencils, notebook, etc.)
  • A scientific calculator
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety boots and overalls (guidance will be provided on what to purchase)
  • A positive attitude and willingness to participate in both practical and theoretical activities
     

Assessment is continuous and varied, including:

  • Practical assignments and skills demonstrations
  • Written assignments and project work
  • Presentations and group tasks
  • Internal and/or external exams
  • Portfolio of evidence and observation records

You must successfully complete all units and assessments to achieve the full qualification.
