Course Information for Students
Who is this course for?
This Level 2 Diploma in Sports Performance study programme is designed for students who regularly participate in football and wish to combine their studies with regular training and competition in this sport.
This study programme includes mandatory sports units such as anatomy, nutrition, coaching and fitness testing. It also includes GSCE English and Maths, tutorial, work experience and sports academy training sessions.
Students applying internally need to evidence high levels of attendance and to be motivated to achieve English and Maths qualifications.
Entry Requirements
You will need to complete an interview and show a desire to achieve both the Maths and English GCSE as this will form a larger proportion of your study. This level of study is suitable for learners with GCSE grade 3 in most subjects.
The study programme will focus on the achievement of English and Maths GCSEs. You are expected to maintain high standards of discipline, punctuality and attendance. It is essential that you work to the deadlines set or you risk the chance of not achieving your programme of study.
Practical training sessions are compulsory, so you must be physically able to take part in both indoor and outdoor sessions. You will also be expected to volunteer on selected weekends throughout the year to gain work experience at major events such as the Derby Half Marathon.
What will you learn?
The course is made up of a number of units and topics which can include:
- GCSE English and Maths
- Fitness training
- Anatomy
- Lifestyle
- Nutrition
- Work placement
- Fitness testing
It also includes a tutorial session to monitor your progress, set targets, support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills. The completion of your GCSEs will enable you to apply for higher level courses.
You need to be aware that certain volunteering events take place at weekends and you will be expected to attend these.
As part of this programme, you will train and play (if selected) for the AoC Sport Football Academy representing the College in the East Midlands league.
How will you learn?
This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.
There are practical sessions in which you will be expected to take part – and others that you are expected to lead.
We encourage learners to bring their own laptop to aid their studies.
What will you need to bring with you?
You will need to have a uniform that is worn every day and when you are on work experience. The minimum expectation for the uniform is that you wear a plain black T-shirt or polo shirt and sweatshirt etc. DCG-branded uniform packs can be purchased for around £50.
You will need to bring suitable footwear and kit for the activities set throughout the year.
All learners are advised to have a tablet or laptop to aid them with their studies.
There may be additional costs incurred for selected trips, visits or academy kit.
How will you be assessed?
You will build a portfolio based around evidence generated by the various assessment methods in each unit. You are expected to work on multiple assessments at any one time. You will be assessed through practical demonstrations, logbooks and performance records, written reports and essays, presentations, workbooks, discussions and vivas.
Maths and English will be assessed through a final exam.
Your availability for competitive fixtures will be at risk if you do not keep up to date with your work or maintain high attendance levels.
Where next?
Your progression is linked to your achievement of GCSE English and Maths. You may then consider applying to the:
- Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sports Coaching and Development
- Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy
- Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction
Alternatively you may wish to seek employment or an apprenticeship in the sport and active leisure industry.
