Course Information for Students
Who is this course for?
This Level 1 College Diploma in Sport and Fitness study programme is designed for students who must focus on improving their GCSE English Language and Maths grades, and whose achievement in these subjects is currently at level 2-1.
Students will study a Sport programme which supplements the delivery of GCSE resits so they can achieve or progress towards higher grades in these qualifications.
They will also have the chance to achieve technical qualifications in Lifestyle Management and Sports Leadership and to gain valuable careers opportunities through work placements.
A Sport programme covering the core concepts will prepare students for studying Sport at Level 2.
Entry Requirements
The course is designed for students with low-level GCSE grades (1-3) or limited qualification achievements. It is essential that applicants show a commitment to maintaining high standards of behaviour and attendance as well as a commitment to meeting deadlines.
Candidates will be invited for an interview and screening test as part of the application process. You are welcome to join the Sport Information Evenings held at DCG throughout the year for further details.
Students must be motivated to achieve English and Maths qualifications as this is the primary aim of this study programme.
What will you learn?
The programme will enhance your understanding in:
- Searching for sports jobs
- Participation in exercise programmes
- Maths skills
- Working in a sport and leisure environment
- Taking part in sport
- Health and fitness

- Volunteering
- Digital skills
You will develop your skills in maths and English to support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills.
You need to be aware that certain volunteering events take place at weekends and you will be expected to attend these or find work experience in your free time.
How will you learn?
This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.
There are practical sessions in which you will be expected to take part – and others that you are expected to lead.
We encourage learners to bring their own laptop to aid their studies.
What will you need to bring with you?
You will need to have a uniform that is worn every day and when you are on work experience. The minimum expectation for the uniform is that you wear a plain black T-shirt or polo shirt and sweatshirt etc. Students can wear whatever they feel comfortable in on their lower half, as long as it is appropriate to the activity being undertaken.
Students should bring a change of clothes and footwear for practical sessions and provision for showering after exercise.
All learners are advised to have a tablet or laptop to aid them with their studies.
There may be additional costs incurred for selected trips or visits.
If you also join one of our sports academies, such as Derby Trailblazers, you may be required to purchase an academy-specific uniform which is an additional cost set by that academy.
Financial assistance is available, depending on your circumstances.
How will you be assessed?
Assessment methods will vary. You are expected to build a portfolio of evidence for each unit. Assessments will include presentations, essays, workbooks, discussions, practical performance, physical testing and role play. You will need to meet deadlines and work on multiple tasks throughout the year.
Maths and English will be assessed through a series of final examinations.
Your availability for competitive fixtures will be at risk if you do not keep up to date with your work or maintain high attendance levels.
