Course Information for Students

This qualification recognises the skills, knowledge and competence required for an individual to work unsupervised as a personal trainer. This includes being able to offer one-to-one training, baseline assessment, nutritional advice and progressive programming specific to the individual needs of a client.

Candidates must evidence their achievement of a Level 2 Gym Instruction qualification prior to starting this course.

The course is due to be delivered at Broomfield Hall over 36 weeks starting:

Thursday: 16/09/21 – 7/07/22

The course costs £811 which can be covered through an Adult Learner Loan.

A minimum of eight candidates need to be enrolled for this course to start.

An understanding of anatomy and physiology is essential.  So too is an understanding of health and safety practices within a gym-based environment.

You should have competency in English and maths to help with the theoretical aspects of the programme.

Although current gym membership is not required, you will be expected to use the gym as part of your ongoing professional development. You should be physically active and should expect to undertake physical activities as part of the course.

You MUST have completed a Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction or an equivalent award which can be evidenced prior to starting this course.

Candidates will cover:

• Further knowledge of anatomy and physiology applicable to personal training.

• Nutrition for exercise, health and fitness.

• Lifestyle and medical factors that affect wellbeing.

• Effective communication skills for client consultations to encourage healthy lifestyle behaviours and strategies for change.

• Skills to plan and conduct physical activity sessions with different types of clients in a variety of environments with a range of resources. 

• Legal and professional requirements for personal training.

• How to set up and manage a personal training business on a self-employed basis.

• How to manage, evaluate and improve own performance.

This course will be delivered on-site.

There are no other mandatory costs involved. However, candidates may wish to purchase additional e-learning materials.

This ACTIVEiQ course is CIMSPA endorsed.

You will be assessed via multiple choice exams, workbooks, practical observations, case studies and assignments.

This course is designed for candidates to work as personal trainers in the fitness industry. You could also further your training with other courses at DCG such as the:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Group Training
  • Level 2 Award in Smoking Cessation
  • Level 2 Award in Alcohol Awareness
  • Level 2 Award in Mental Health Awareness
  • Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy
