Course Information for Students

This course is designed for people wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as gym-based fitness instructors. It is the first year of a possible three-year programme towards qualifying as a Level 3 Personal Trainer and Level 4 Advanced Personal Trainer.

This qualification must be achieved before moving on to study a Level 3 Personal Training qualification.

Minimum entry requirements for this course are set at five GCSEs at grade 3 or better. There is the opportunity to resit either English OR Maths should your GCSE profile support this.

Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential. Therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

There is a requirement for communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at Level 2.

You should expect to be asked to lead sessions under supervision – individually and as part of a group – to external clients or other College students.

Course content will cover:

  • Anatomy, physiology and nutrition and how they relate to exercise and fitness
  • Health and safety in the fitness environment
  • The skills to conduct client and group inductions in a gym-based environment and support exercise adherence and a healthy lifestyle
  • The skills to plan, instruct and supervise safe and effective exercise and physical activity sessions
  • Professionalism for fitness instructing
  • Personal and professional development
  • Delivering exceptional customer service

A number of additional qualifications will also feature on your timetable such as:

  • Instructing Kettlebells
  • Understanding Nutrition
  • Smoking Cessation

This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.

There are no additional course costs, though candidates may wish to consider CIMSPA membership at their own cost.

Students will need to wear black tops at all times and must have a change of clothes and footwear to undertake practical work.

We encourage students to bring their own laptop.

You will be assessed via:

• Coursework/Project
• Multiple Choice Examination
• Portfolio of Evidence
• Practical Demonstration/Assignment/Assessment

English or Maths GCSE resits will be assessed through examinations.

This qualification provides progression to the:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training
  • Level 2 Certificate in Group Training
  • Level 2 Award in Mental Health Awareness

I liked the way the timetable was set out and how laid-back college was. Calling the teachers by their first names meant there was a better connection between staff and students.
