BSc (Hons) Equine Science (Biomechanics and Performance or Riding and Coaching) (Top Up) Part Time – 2 years

This dynamic part-time top-up degree is designed for students who have completed a Level 5 qualification in a related discipline and are ready to advance their academic and professional journey in the equine industry. The programme combines rigorous academic study with practical, work-based learning, equipping students with the specialist skills and knowledge essential for a successful career in the equine sector. 

With a strong focus on employability, the course includes modules in research, equine science and training, and professional development, all tailored to help students refine their practice and prepare for future roles within the industry. 

Validated by the University of Derby and regulated by the Office for Students (OfS), the course can be studied full-time over one year or part-time over two years. Students can choose between riding and non-riding pathways to suit their individual interests and career goals.

The programme will run with a minimum cohort of six students. 

Course Fees: £6,500 per academic year 

Academic Year Structure: The core higher education academic year spans 33 weeks for the purposes of maintenance loans. Of this, 26 weeks will be delivered directly through teaching, with the remaining time allocated to activities such as induction, tutorials, research, directed study, and reading weeks, as appropriate. 

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must hold a Level 5 qualification in a relevant subject area, which can be animal or equine related. 

In addition, applicants should have: 

• Four GCSEs at grades 9–4 (A*–C), or equivalent qualifications: these must include English, Maths and Science 
• A keen interest in equine studies and knowledge of the industry 

All applicants will be invited to attend an interview to discuss their qualifications, experience and, if applicable, their riding ability. 

For those selecting the riding pathway, a riding assessment will be conducted prior to the start of the course. Applicants must be working at BHS Stage 3 standard or above. 

International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency, typically through a minimum IELTS score, and will also be required to attend a successful interview. Please contact the College for specific guidance. 

Applicants must be aged 18 or over at the start of the course. 

All admissions are subject to approval by the University of Derby.

This course is delivered on-site at Derby College Group’s Broomfield Hall Campus, offering a hands-on and immersive learning experience. You’ll engage in:

This blended approach ensures you gain both academic knowledge and practical industry experience. 

As part of the programme, students should be aware of the following costs: 

Essential Costs 

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Approximately £100 for practical work
• Industry-Relevant Trips and Visits: Approximately £150 across the course, payable at the time of each trip or visit

Optional Costs 

Students may choose to pursue British Horse Society (BHS) qualifications alongside their degree. Associated costs include: 

• BHS Gold Membership
• BHS Stage 1 (including Ride Safe)
• BHS Stage 2 (including Stage 2 Teach)
• BHS Stage 3 (including Stage 3 Teach)

These optional qualifications can enhance employability and support career progression within the equine industry. 

Assessment throughout the programme is designed to reflect real-world industry practices while developing key transferable skills. You’ll be evaluated using a variety of methods, including: 

• Written assignments
• Practical assessments
• Reports
• Group presentations
• Poster presentations

These assessments are a mix of formative (ongoing feedback) and summative (final grading), tailored to support your academic progress and career readiness. 

There are no formal written exams for the core modules. Assessment is primarily coursework-based, with a strong emphasis on applied learning. 

Riding Assessment 

If you choose the riding pathway, you’ll complete a riding assessment before the programme begins. It is desirable that you are riding at Stage 3 equivalent or elementary level, and capable of jumping 90cm or higher. 

Minimum riding requirements include: 

• Experience riding a variety of horses in different environments
• A weight limit of 13 stone (82.5 kg) applies for all riders, including the weight of PPE

Further Study 

Graduates of the two-year part-time BSc (Hons) Equine Science, Management and Training programme will be well-equipped with industry-relevant experience and a broad range of employability skills. Progression routes may include: 

• Postgraduate study, such as a Masters degree in Equine Science, Animal Behaviour, or related disciplines 
• Opportunities in research and development within the equine or wider animal science sectors 
• Additional professional qualifications, such as British Horse Society (BHS) certifications 

Students will continue to develop their Maths and English skills throughout the programme, supporting both academic success and workplace readiness. 

Career Pathways 

Graduates may pursue careers in a variety of roles within the equestrian industry, including: 

• Yard ownership or management
• Equine coaching and teaching
• Horse training and development

There are also opportunities in related sectors such as: 

• Sales and marketing
• Product development
• Business and operations management

Entrepreneurial students may choose to build on their skills and move into self-employment, launching their own equine-related ventures.
