Course Summary

Course Information for Students
Who is this course for?
Students who want a strong foundation in Applied Science, Human Biology, and digital skills with a practical, career-focused approach. They’re ideal for students interested in progressing to university, apprenticeships, or employment in science, healthcare, technology, or data-related fields. Whether you’re aiming for a career in biomedical science, environmental work, digital analytics, or just want to keep your options open with a hands-on qualification, the AAQs offer a flexible and modern route into further education and the workplace.
Entry Requirements
You need grade 4 in GCSE English and Maths, 4,4 in Combined Science and 4,4,4 if you took triple GCSE Science.
What will you learn?
The fundamentals in scientific principles across biology, chemistry, and physics—learning through practical and real-world applications.
You’ll explore the inner workings of the human body—from cell structure and physiology to genetics, health, disease, and biomedical laboratory techniques like microscopy and DNA testing.
The foundations of data analytics—covering data collection, storage, access, cleansing, visualization, legal and ethical considerations, and relevant job roles.
Plus, you’ll develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities relevant to forensic, radiography, environmental science, and other STEM industries
How will you learn?
You’ll learn through a balance of theory and practical experimentation.
What will you need to bring with you?
Enthusiasm and a willingness to complete practical work is important along with the motivation to get involved in group tasks. All scientific equipment is provided, you will need to provide stationary, paper and folders to organise your work.
How will you be assessed?
Assessment is split between externally marked written exams and internally assessed coursework (NEAs – non-exam assessments). Each subject includes mandatory exam units testing core knowledge and understanding. Alongside this, you’ll complete practical or project-based NEAs where you apply what you’ve learned to real-world tasks—such as scientific investigations, data analysis projects, or lab-based techniques.
Where next?
Further study This is an ideal progression pathway to a variety of science degrees such as environmental science, forensic science, biomedical science and many other applied science subjects.
Careers The science sector of the economy offers huge potential for interested students, with a wealth of large employers needing this skillset. Some of the industries you could progress to include analytical services, environmental testing, food testing services and medical testing laboratories. Local firms which offer these types of career opportunities include Socotec, Intertek, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, and Tentamus.
