Course Information for Students

The after school club is for young children (8-12 years old) who want to come and spend an hour learning about the amazing animals at Broomfield Hall Animal Unit. Each week will focus on a different section of the Animal Unit so there is always something new to see and do. Children will learn how to handle some of the animals, help with grooming the animals, undertake behaviour observations, make enrichment, conduct health checks and help to feed the animals.

Children will work in the following sections of the Animal Unit: Reptile Room, Small Mammal Room, Rodent Room, Zoo Animals and Farm Animals.

Parents/guardians are welcome to wait on site while the children undertake the activities.

Participants will need basic literacy and numeracy skills, and some basic knowledge of animal care. They should be aged 8-12 years.

The session will cover:

  • Feeding the animals
  • Enrichment building
  • Health checking
  • Handling (where applicable)
  • Grooming animals
  • Behaviour observations of the animals

The club is delivered on site at Broomfield Hall Animal Unit.

Participants will be required to supply their own boots or wellingtons, which should preferably be steel toe-capped, or they can borrow some from the Animal Unit.

There is no assessment.

DCG offers a range of one-day, weekend and evening courses relating to Animal Care, as well as a wide range of other land-based topics. Please see our part-time prospectus or the DCG website for a full list and details.
