Are you a fully qualified teacher in post-14 education who wishes to develop a specialism supporting students to develop their behaviour for learning? Are you teaching or planning to teach KS4 in a school or academy, or to teach in a college, with a training provider, in a prison or in the voluntary sector? This module will give you a solid foundation in all aspects of teaching to prepare you for a highly successful career. It is offered in partnership with the University of Derby.
The course is delivered using innovative learning methods, technology enhanced resources and one-to-one observations of you in your own practice. Upon successful completion of this Level 5 or 7 programme, you will be well informed about the theoretical underpinnings of approaches to the management of the classroom and its associated behaviours.
This module is delivered at the Roundhouse Campus of Derby College Group and the qualification is awarded by the University of Derby. The course is delivered by our highly qualified and experienced Teacher Training team who were judged ‘outstanding’ for Initial Teacher Education (FE and Skills) in the last Ofsted inspection (December 2015). All students benefit from access to the Derby College Learning Resources Centre, the University of Derby library, and the College’s Moodle (online learning platform) pages.

All applicants are subject to approval from the University of Derby. The course will only run with a minimum of 15 enrolments.
Assessment is through coursework and an exciting range of assessment methods is used. This includes observing multiple examples of best practice to gain an understanding of how behaviour for learning can be enhanced to support positive progression.
Following observations, students are invited to reflect on and critically assess the examples of learning behaviour evident within the sessions observed and apply it to their own practice. You are required to undertake research and write in an appropriate academic style, using Harvard Referencing systems. All assessments require you to apply theory to your own practice and you are expected to engage with academic research and learning theory.
This module, alongside your teaching qualification, provides you with an ideal platform to progress. At Level 7 this would enable you to progress straight to an MA ED. If you progress to the University of Derby, you will already have achieved 60 credits towards your Masters qualification. At Level 5 it would give you additional credits to progress to a full honours degree.
Throughout the course, you will experience a wide range of teaching techniques and will be both supported and encouraged to experiment with these techniques within your own classroom so that you exit the programme as a creative and innovative practitioner.

Taking a diploma course via Derby College's Academy of Professional Education Training and Development, reminded teaching assistant Laura Stevens just how much she loves learning. Laura, a business studies and marketing graduate, used to work in marketing at a Derby-based medical firm, but decided to change career after having children.
She had always been interested in education so she started volunteering at her children's primary school in Quarndon – a role which led to a permanent job as a teaching assistant. On the recommendation of the school, Laura enrolled on the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools course at the Roundhouse and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Although fitting in study with raising her two children and working part-time was "a juggling act", Laura finds her new career very rewarding. It is, she says, the perfect choice for herself and her family, and Laura is now looking forward to studying for her Level 4 qualification.
My lecturer, Lynn was amazing – very friendly and supportive. Most of the people on my course were also parents with young families and our tutors understood the pressures we were under.
I loved studying – it was lovely to be back learning again – and I also liked learning with other people, who, like me, had taken a break and were now returning to work.
We set up our own WhatsApp group so we could help each other with our coursework. It’s a great course and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
