Course Summary

The Cycle Derby Cycling Academy programme gives riders the opportunity to develop their cycling skills in a number of disciplines while studying academic qualifications in Sport.
The College’s partnership with Cycle Derby enables students to benefit from the expertise of highly qualified and respected coaches, which enhances the cycling-focussed curriculum. Riders will have block weeks of developing their skills in track, bmx, cyclo-cross, road, mountain biking and TT, alongside coaching and bike maintenance workshops.

Entry requirements

Applications are welcomed from individuals who regularly participate in any form of cycling and who show a desire and willingness to develop their sporting performance.
Entry to the Level 3 programme requires candidates to have a minimum of five GCSEs at Level 4-9 (A*- C) grades (including English and Maths). Students without this profile should still apply as the Academy is open to those on Level 2 provision too.

Course Content

The course includes:
  • A dedicated training calendar
  • Opportunities to progress to elite level pathways through Team Derby
  • Access to British Cycling regional and national events
  • A comprehensive coaching programme
  • Technical and tactical aspects
  • Bike maintenance
  • Work placements and volunteering at the Derby Arena

For specific curriculum content, please see the Sports Coaching or Skills for Sport pages on our website.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments occur throughout the year depending on the subjects studied. See information on our Level 3 Sports Coaching course or Skills for Sport course for more details.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

Students need to purchase a kit.  The cost of this will be finalised at the start of the course but is expected to be in the region of £50. An additional contribution of £50 is to be paid for the year-end celebration event, trips and speakers. There may be additional costs incurred for selected trips or visits during the year. Students will receive free gym membership for the academic year once these fees are paid.

There is no expectation that riders will have their own bikes. However, they are welcome to use them if they do. Riders are advised to provide their own helmets and shoes - although, again, these may be provided.

For applicants from outside the region or who travel over distance, the College has residential accommodation if required.

What can I do after this course?

On successful completion of the course, students may wish to progress to the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching or seek employment within the sport and leisure sector.

This course is run at the Broomfield Hall Campus

Katy Morten

Ahead of the game in a sporting career

Ever since school, Katy Morten had set her heart on becoming a personal trainer.

By the age of just 21, she had already achieved her career goal – thanks to a sport apprenticeship programme run by Derbyshire Dales District Council in partnership with Derby College.

Having secured a full-time job as an instructor at Bakewell Swimming Pool, Katy particularly enjoys helping people to reach their goals – whether it be weight loss or training for a particular sporting event.

I knew I could get nationally recognised qualifications more quickly on an apprenticeship – and having lots of work experience in the industry under my belt would stand me in good stead when looking for employment. Plus, who could argue with being paid to learn?

There’s a real feel-good factor to my job – just knowing you have helped someone improve their lifestyle and become happier with themselves.
