Course Summary

This course is ideal if you’d like to perfect your hairdressing skills to work effectively as a senior stylist. You will learn advanced hair cutting, styling and colouring techniques, including promotional activities.

Working with our highly motivated staff in fantastic facilities and using the latest products, you will develop your communication and customer service skills to support your success in a vibrant industry.

As part of your studies, you will be required to complete work experience to further develop your skills and behaviours to meet industry standards.

Entry requirements

You need to be highly motivated and demonstrate a keen interest in your chosen subject. Offers of a place on the course are dependent on your qualifications and practical aptitude. You will need:

  • a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above including English and/or Maths (grade 4 or above).
  • an Intermediate Diploma in the chosen subject to a Merit or Distinction standard.

You will have an interview and initial assessment in maths and English and will attend a skills test. You will also be required to present a current portfolio of work at your interview. Parents and carers are welcome to attend the interview but not the initial assessment.

Course Content

You will study advanced hair cutting, styling and colouring techniques, including promotional activities.
 
You will also develop your skills in maths and English, which will support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills. 

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a range of methods including practical observation, oral questioning, written tests, assignments and preparing a portfolio of evidence. 

Maths and English are assessed through a controlled assessment and a GCSE involves a final exam.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

A kit and uniform are required for the programme. Details will be made available during your interview.

 

What can I do after this course?

Further study
The teaching staff will advise you on the wide range of opportunities available. These include progression to a Level 4 programme where you can continue to develop your skills in maths and English.

Careers
You can progress your career in salons, in technician roles or in self-employment.

Danielle Fretwell

Former salon Saturday girl Danielle becomes hair

Teenager Danielle Fretwell has got a hair apprenticeship at the salon she first started helping out at as a 14-year-old Saturday girl.
Danielle, who is 17 and from Heanor, recently started her level 2 hairdressing course at Derby College and is now an apprentice at Effleurage in Langley Mill.
Although she likes a lot of things about her new job, Danielle particularly likes the social side. She enjoys talking to clients, and her ability to get on with people and put them at ease has impressed her employer, Marissa Hunt.
Danielle has the opportunity to learn the beauty side too, but at the moment she is happy to focus on hairdressing and is working towards becoming a fully qualified stylist with the salon.

I go to college on day release every Monday and work in the salon the rest of the week. It's a good course and I put into practice what I've learned at college when I'm at work.


Marissa did her hairdressing training at Derby College and she now runs her own business, so I thought it would be the right place for me too. I'm the third apprentice from Derby College to be taken on by Effleurage.
