Course Summary

Please do not apply for this course if you will be 16 or older in September 2022. This course is part of our Pre-16 Provision and is only accessible if your school has agreed to fund the placement during Years 10 and 11.

The WJEC Level 1/Level 2 Award in Constructing the Built Environment (603/3068/5)* has been developed in partnership with CITB to provide an engaging introduction to the construction industry from the build perspective. Students will learn the technical knowledge and skills needed within the construction industry over three trade areas (Brickwork, Plastering and Painting & Decorating).

The course is delivered over two years, starting in Year 10, and students will study at the Roundhouse (Hudson Building) for either half a day or a full day a week.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements: you just need a strong interest in  construction.

You will be assessed during the first term at College to ensure this is the most suitable course for you, with fall-back options available.

Course Content

You will need to complete three mandatory units:

  • Safety and security in construction – gain the knowledge and understanding to minimise risk to yourself and others and learn about health and safety in different contexts within construction.

Weighting: 25% of the course

Assessment: External examination

  • Developing construction projects – interpret technical information to plan the refurbishment of a building and utilise your skills to carry out the work in the three trade areas.

Weighting: 50% of the course

Assessment: Internal assessment

  • Planning construction projects – using the knowledge acquired in the first two units, learn how to plan straightforward built environment development projects.

Weighting: 25% of the course

Assessment: External examination

How will I be assessed?

Students will be assessed through a mixture of internal assignments and external examinations.

All three units must be successfully completed to gain this qualification.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

Students must wear steel toe-cap boots and safety overalls (purchased through Derby College Group) in the workshop. You will be required to supply your own writing materials.

What can I do after this course?

Further Study

Upon completion of the qualification, and depending on the grades achieved and other qualifications gained, students may wish to progress to:

  • A Level 2 trade-specific qualification (e.g. Bricklaying, Plastering, Plumbing)
  • A T Level in Professional Construction
  • An apprenticeship programme at Level 2 or 3
  • A-levels

You will be able to access advice and guidance while studying at the College to learn more about the post-16 opportunities available for you.

Further study can lead to a variety of careers, including:

  • Tradesperson (Bricklayer, Tiler, Plasterer, Plumber, Carpenter, etc.)
  • Scaffolder
  • Roofer
  • Landscaper
  • Building Surveyor

Lewis says apprenticeship is "setting me up for life"

Teenager Lewis Cottle says switching direction to an apprenticeship course is helping to "set me up for life". Seventeen-year-old Lewis was one of two applicants chosen by Ilkeston-based Belfield Furnishings to be taken on to work in its maintenance team. Lewis, who lives in Ilkeston, said he was impressed by a presentation by the company at college.
 
He decided to apply so he could learn a variety of trades. Richard Newby, HSE and maintenance manager at Belfield, said Lewis's application was one of those which stood out and he was one of two candidates taken on. Lewis has now switched from a Level 1 Brickwork course to study towards a Level 2 Diploma in Maintenance.
 
He is studying one day a week at college and learning the ropes with Belfield on the remaining four working days. Richard Newby, Belfield's HSE and maintenance manager said the company's aim was to "invest time and training so our apprentices gain the skills they need to be part of the team for the long haul." He added: "We're pleased to have them on board."

At college the teachers show you the easiest and best ways to do a job. They really help if you are struggling with something.


I like the job because it's actually doing something real. If you do it, like a factory floor, it's here for the next 30 years or more. It's an achievement.
It's great having some money coming in to save up. I can manage my money better to help set me up in life.
