Course Summary

Functional Skills provide individuals with the essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to get the most out of life, learning and work.

This qualification is suitable for a wide range of learners, including adults returning to study, employees and adults in part-time education.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to access this course.

All applicants will be invited to an interview and assessment session. On completion of the initial assessment, you will discuss the most appropriate level of course to meet your needs. We offer a variety of levels - from Beginner to Level 2.

Course Content

  • The basics – security and safety, passwords, viruses, storage, and managing files and folders
  • The Internet and email – searching, sending and receiving emails, contacts lists, and organising your inbox
  • Word processing – formatting text and documents, tables, mail merge and graphics
  • Spreadsheets – entering, editing, sorting and filtering data, formatting and formulas
  • Charts and graphs – producing different types of charts  and graphs – bar, column, line and scattergraphs and pie charts
  • Presentations – understanding, making and editing presentations
  • Databases – sorting and filtering data, running queries and reports

How will I be assessed?

At the start of the course, you will be assessed to find out what you need to learn. You will then agree an individual learning plan appropriate to your situation and needs. You will be assessed informally throughout the course to check on your progress. 

Qualifications are obtained by completion of a final test, with several tasks based around one main theme. Typical skills assessed involve:

  • Using the Internet
  • Working on a spreadsheet
  • Producing a document in a word processing program

IT skills are becoming increasingly important in our everyday lives.

Former carer Steph passes five courses to target teaching career

A long-time carer with elderly people has forged a new career in the classroom with deaf youngsters after passing five separate courses at Derby College. Dedicated Stephanie Davis, 47, switched direction after 20 years and joined Derby's Royal School for the Deaf as a residential worker in 2008. Now she has gained a string of qualifications, passing Functional Maths at Level 1 and 2 and Functional English at Level 1, as well gaining NVQs in working with children in a residential setting and as a teaching assistant. Now Stephanie, from Mackworth, is studying for Functional English Level 2 and aiming to go on to study for a High Level Teaching Assistant qualification at Level 4. Promoted to Senior Teaching Assistant (Teaching Support), Stephanie says that could be a stepping stone towards her dream job as a teacher at the school. Previously she gained qualifications with Derby College, in Community Care and Caring for the Elderly.

Stephanie said: "Every step of the way I've been supported by the college. I'm not a natural at English but the college has given been brilliant and helped my confidence no end."
