Course Summary

Coaching and mentoring are now recognised as powerful strategies for effectively developing individuals.  This course will include planning and preparing specific learning and development opportunities and requires delegates to practise their coaching and mentoring skills in the workplace.

It leads to an ideal qualification for managers and mentors with significant responsibility for coaching and mentoring as part of their day-to-day role.  It is also designed to support students to move into a development role or to start a career as a freelance coach and mentor.  It will enable delegates to:

  • Gain a critical understanding of the role and responsibilities of the workplace coach and mentor
  • Deepen their understanding of how coaching and mentoring can impact an organisation and individuals
  • Assess their own skills, behaviours and knowledge as a coach and mentor
  • Provide evidence of their own development as a coach and mentor through the qualification
  • Plan, deliver and review coaching and mentoring in their organisation.

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for managers in the workplace, including managers working in an educational setting, who have responsibility for coaching and/or mentoring as part of their day-to-day role.

All applicants must attend a customised information session to gain full details and an application pack.  This will include an informal interview to discuss their qualifications, experience, workplace role and motivation/aspirations.

Applicants need evidence of:

  • A recognised Level 2 or equivalent qualification in English
  • A Level 3 qualification and/or the ability to demonstrate the capacity to work at Level 5
  • Coaching/mentoring as part of their workplace role: applicants must be in a position to undertake a minimum of 12 hours of formal and contracted coaching or mentoring, and be able to show how they have reflected on their performance.
  • Capacity to attend seven classroom-based learning sessions during the programme, take part in a minimum of two tutorials and engage in a minimum of two workplace visits/observations.
The course will only run with a minimum of ten enrolments.

Course Content

The course entails seven three-hour classroom-based sessions over the six-month period, two hours of tutorials and workplace observations.  Alongside this, the delegates will engage in independent study – ILM suggest 75 hours of independent study will be needed.

Mandatory modules are:

  • Understanding the Skills, Principles and Practice of Effective Management Coaching and Mentoring (5 credits)
  • Undertaking Management Coaching or Mentoring in the Workplace (5 credits)
  • Reviewing Own Ability as a Management Coach or Mentor (3 credits)

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through coursework and an exciting range of assessment methods is used. These include observations, self-evaluation, reflective tasks, written assignments, individual and group poster presentations, and professional discussions.  All assessment methods have been designed to focus on skills specific to the professional coach or mentor, while incorporating key transferable skills.

The delegates are required to undertake research and write in an appropriate academic style, using Harvard Referencing systems.

All assessments require delegates to apply theory to their own practice and they are expected to engage with academic research and learning theory in a manner commensurate with higher-level study.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

What can I do after this course?

This qualification may provide progression opportunities to other ILM qualifications such as the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management or the ILM Level 7 Certificate or Diploma in Coaching Supervision.

Delegates could also progress into a mentoring role in the workplace, including in an educational setting, or a work-based teaching and learning role (assessor-coach).

New qualification is “massive help” for assessor Aimee

Business Administration assessor Aimee Woore has found that taking the Level 4 Preparing to Deliver Apprenticeship Standards course at Derby College is helping her massively in her daily work.
Aimee, a sales and marketing co-ordinator for Kettering Borough Council, also delivers business admin training to staff across the borough via the ETF, the Education & Training Foundation.
And, since completing her course at Derby College's Academy of Professional Education, Training and Development, she has taken on an additional role – heading up a work experience programme for 16 to 18 year olds in Kettering – and has found her new qualification invaluable.
Aimee, who found the course online via the ETF, opted to take it at Derby College, rather than at another centre in London, and is pleased with her decision.
She also welcomed the opportunity to be in a roomful of people in similar roles to her own but from a variety of different sectors and providers.

Taking the Derby College course has helped me massively in my job. The course was well structured, the facilities and materials were good and our tutors were excellent. The biggest thing I learned while on the course was teaching strategies, including hints and tips on the different options available. It was interesting to see our tutors demonstrate these options in their own teaching.

The techniques and strategies we were taught have been very helpful, both in my work and on a personal level. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would like to use the credits to continue studying.
